Miss Taken
horror in his face.
“Relax. I won’t start singing ‘In the jungle, the mighty jungle, the lion sleeps tonight’,” she sang.
“You do realize that story is about a child. And it’s a cartoon,” he said, his lips twitching holding back a grin.
“Yes. I do. It’s very immature of me, but it’s still fun.” She grinned wider. “Guess I shouldn’t call you Simba, either?”
He groaned in exasperation. “Please, don’t you may not like the consequences otherwise.”
Kira laughed in delight at his easy bantering. She decided to spare him more teasing, she didn’t know how much he could handle yet and she did not want to end up regretting it later.
“Do we need to bring in more wood before we can’t get out the door?”
    He nodded. “I’ll go now.”
She glanced at his empty plate and gaped. How the fuck had he eaten that huge steak so fast. She then peered at her own plate. She’d gotten one third of the way and couldn’t eat any more. “I’ll come with you.”
“No. You’ll end up wetting your clothes again with the snow.”
“I want to help,” she stated.
He growled softly. For a second she thought he might argue with her, but instead, he sighed. “Fine. I’ll pass them to you at the door and you can take them to the fireplace.”
It took fifteen minutes of passing logs until they had enough for the night. She had a feeling they were slow in the process because he’d given her so many small logs.
His phone rang as he locked the front door to the cabin. She watched him strip off his shirt and felt her mouth for drool.
“Hi, Mom,” he said and headed for the stairs leading to the second floor. She followed after him, stopping by the entrance to her room. She wanted to go with him to his room, but then they might do something bad, like having more awesome sex.
She had to remember why that wouldn’t be a good thing. Her pulse jumped and her temperature spiked thinking of him naked.

    TWENTY

Luke felt Kira’s gaze on his back. It heated his blood and flooded his system with the need to fuck her. Mate her. Take her.
He went into his guestroom and stripped off his clothes.
“Luke, are you listening to me?” his mom asked.
“Sorry,” he said. “What have you found out?”
She grumbled about him not paying attention. “One of the pride boys is missing.”
“Who?” he asked, his attention focused on the conversation.
“Nick Treynor,” she replied. “His mother said he went out last night with some friends but never made it home.”
Nick was no boy. In his twenties, the guy had a predisposition for getting into trouble. Even when there was none around.
“Luke, his mom is worried. Will you look for him tomorrow when the snow stops?”
He sighed. “Yes. I’ll find him. He knows better than to be out during a storm.”
“I know, son,” his mother said. “Thank you. I’ll let you know if I hear anything else.”
“How are you?” he asked. He usually went by to make sure she had enough wood in the house, but with Kira in his home, he had lost track of time.
“I’m fine. I have enough wood, if that’s worrying you. Besides,” she laughed, “I live closer to others than you do. I have neighbors to both sides about five hundred feet away.”
“I know. I still want to make sure you’re okay.”
“You are such a great boy. Now tell me how your guest is doing,” she asked. “I know you’re taking care of her.”
“Bastien talks too much,” he growled.
“Now, now. Don’t say that. He just mentioned she smelled distinctly like…you.” His mother giggled. “I’m glad you found someone to get you through this time.”
Should he mention it was more than that? He could easily spend the height of his need alone. It would bother him and he’d be frustrated, but he could do it. This was more than that. Kira was his mate. The one woman, other than his mother, who was his reason for living.
    “Mom,” he said with exasperation.
