Isaiahâs voice was even, and angry, and something clicked for Clover. Heâd been distant lately, although she didnât really register it until right now. âYou should have been the one to tell me that.â
âYou shouldnât know that at all,â Jude said.
âI know there is some ranch somewhere outside the city that heâs holed up in.â
Clover waited, to see if Isaiah would say more, but he just looked at her. âWeâre leaving the city. Tonight.â
âYou canât do that.â
âYes,â Jude said, âwe can.â
âWhy would you want to?â Isaiah looked at Bridget. âWhatâs going on?â
âThereâs too much to explain right now,â Clover said. When she thought about telling him about the Freaks, about Leanne, about Bennett trying to put her back to work at the Companyâit definitely was too much. âWe have to go tonight. Youâll just have to trust us.â
Isaiah was completely focused on Bridget. âYouâre not thinking about leaving?â
She looked miserable, sitting on the chair by the window, her arms wrapped around herself. âAre you going to go?â
âWell, you arenât going anywhere without me. And Iâm not going anywhere if I donât know more about what in the hell you guys are talking about.â
Clover started to tell Isaiah about Bennett but then stopped herself. He would want to know how she knew, and she didnât want to tell him about Leanne. âBridget has to come with us,â she said.
âWhy does she have to?â
âBecause if she doesnât, sheâs going to be questioned when Bennett realizes that Clover is gone,â Jude cut in. âAnd so will you.â
âI can handle questions.â
âMaybe you can,â Clover said. âBut do you want to put Bridget through that?â
âTell me what the hell is going on, or Iâm going to be forced to stop you. For your own good, Clover, so donât look at me like that.â
Would Bennett be able to find out which ranch the Freaks were at, if Isaiah told him that they were hiding at one? The Ponderosa used to be a theme park. Bennett might not ever make the connection. Bridget could lead him right to it, though. âYou should come with us, Isaiah.â
âNot until I know why youâre leaving.â
âWe arenât going to tell you,â Jude said. Isaiah gave a short, hard laugh. âNot until weâre out of the city. Then weâll know for sure.â
âKnow what?â
âThat youâre one of us.â Jude tilted his head. âMaybe you want to ask West some questions.â
âLeaving the city is stupid. No one leaves the city.â
âBridget,â Clover said. âAre you going to say anything? Tell him that we have to go.â
Bridget opened her mouth, but all that came out was a hard gasp. Her wet eyes and blotchy face made Clover want to scream.
âDo you want to be questioned?â Clover asked. âDo you want to end up a ghost, like Judeâs brother? Just gone? Because thatâs what will happen if you stay. We have to go, and if you donât come with us, Bennett will come after you until you tell him what you know.â
Had she forgotten that all of their lives were turned upside down because Bennett was sure that Bridget knew something she shouldnât? West had been forced to help her, which was the only reason he was out of the city in the first place.
âWhat does she know?â Isaiah asked. âShe doesnât know anything.â
âShe knows everything,â Jude said. âAnd she couldnât even keep herself from telling you about West. Are you going to put her up against Bennett? Really?â
The tension in the room ramped up, suddenly, to the point where Clover couldnât catch her breath. She forced herself to stay, but had to wrap her arms
