week.â
Todd laughed. âI havenât shaved for a month.â
Christy laughed with him. âOops! Sorry.â
Todd rubbed his chin with his thumb and forefinger. âI guess growing facial hair isnât one of my talents.â
âTry a goatee,â Katie suggested, reaching over and touching Toddâs chin.
âYou think?â he asked.
âSure,â Christy agreed. âTry shaving all of it but this part.â She reached across the table and rubbed the soft fuzz across his chin. âItâs actually a little darker there.â
âReally?â Todd held up the back of a spoon and tried to catch his reflection. Then, without looking up, Todd asked, âDo both of you want to go to Capri?â
âI do,â Christy said.
âSure,â Katie agreed. âDoes this mean we have a plan?â
âI guess so,â Todd said, putting down the spoon and ordering a mineral water from the waiter who now stood before them. Christy ordered the same.
Katie shrugged and said, âOkay. Another one of those.â
The waiter looked unclear as to what she was telling him.
â Tre aqua minerale ,â Todd ordered for them.
Christy was impressed and gave Todd a look of admiration.
âItâs so close to Spanish,â he said. âWhen I was in Spain last year I picked up a few key phrases.â
âGood,â Katie said. âTeach me how to ask, âWhere is the bathroom?â â
âOut that door and to the left,â Todd said. âWe passed it on the way in.â
âThat doesnât do me any good,â Katie said. âIâm serious. Teach me whatever phrases you know. I get nervous when I canât communicate.â
âAnd I get nervous when you do communicate,â Christy said under her breath.
âWhat was that?â Katie leaned forward, her arms resting on the white tablecloth.
Christy hesitated before deciding honesty was the way to go with her friends. âIâve been having a hard time not getting upset at you all day, Katie.â
âWhy? What did I do?â
âFirst, this morning you had all those accusations outside Antonioâs house after breakfast. I think youâll notice from the way things are going that those assumptions werenât completely accurate.â
Katie tilted her head back and forth as if weighing Christyâs words. âI still see some potential, but youâre right. It doesnât appear to be what I thought it was earlier.â
âI can assure you, from my perspective, it is not.â Christy glanced at Todd.
âAm I supposed to know what you guys are talking about?â he asked.
âNo,â Christy said quickly. She went right on to her next point. âAnd the whole thing about Rick was more than needed to be said, Katie.â
âWhy? What did I say wrong? Todd didnât mind. Did you, Todd?â
Todd shook his head. âWe all go through different stages in life. Some relationships last and others donât. Thatâs reality.â
Christy thought his evaluation was a little too down-to-earth, even for Todd. It sounded as if he could be referring to another relationship, a larger one than the brief handful of dates Christy had with Rick.
Maybe heâs talking about his relationship with Rick. The two of them shared an apartment in college with some other guys, but now Todd and Rick never see each other .
âCan you let me out, Katie?â Todd asked. âIâll be right back.â
âNope. Not until you say it in Italian.â
âI donât know how to say it in Italian,â Todd said.
âThen too bad. Youâre stuck.â
As Christy watched, a little-boy grin appeared on Toddâs face. It was the same look he and his buddy Doug used to get at the beach when they were about to pick up one of the girls and throw her into the ocean. Todd reached under the table, and Katie
