steam out into the dark room. She listened to the sound for what seemed like too long: splashing, soothing, like the pitter patter of raindrops.
When she couldn't stand being alone with her thoughts for any longer, she bit her lip and got up. Maybe it didn't have to be over quite yet.
She paused to give Austin an affectionate glance before slipping through the doorway. There was no need to worry about disturbing his sleep. He wouldn't wake for anything short of a bomb blast or Armageddon.
In the shower, Scott stood in all his naked glory, lathered suds dripping down his hard chest and strong legs. She couldn't help but take him in, her eyes wandering over every ridge and muscle.
He glanced up at her, freezing for a moment. Then he chuckled and shook his head as he continued to wash.
    Amber smiled. "What?"
    "Nothing."
The corset had already been loosened during her earlier flirtation, so she reached up to finish the job. Her fingers worked seductively, freeing each string with an exaggerated flourish.
    "Mind if I join you?"
He gave a nonchalant shake of his head as he scrubbed his arms. But his eyes remained fixed on her.
With one last tug, she peeled the fabric from her chest and her breasts spilled out, tingling and finally freed. Then she bent over to drop her skirt.
Scott tilted his head. He was trying to remain impassive, not show anything—she could tell. But his hands had stopped moving, as if he'd forgotten about washing himself. And his stare burned into her body, prickling her naked skin.
He stepped aside as she opened the glass door and took her place facing the showerhead.
"Do you have the soap?" She glanced over her shoulder, the hot water cascading down her chest and peaked nipples.
"Yeah." Scott gave her a crooked grin. Then he reached around her, offering the small bar on his palm.
"Well, go ahead then." She wiggled her ass against his crotch and winked back at him.
He raised an eyebrow before reaching for a washcloth. "Okay." Rubbing the soap and fabric together, lather foamed over his fingers.
Starting at her shoulders, he smoothed down her arms and back up under them. Then he washed down her sides with quick, easy strokes, each swath of his hand sending tingles up her spine. His motion was purposeful and direct, not as soft as Austin's sensual touch, but not exactly rough either.
The wet cloth trailed down her back and over her rear where he paused briefly, his soapy finger brushing lightly over her tender hole.
She gasped and heat rose in her cheeks—but not unwelcome; the good kind of heat. She turned in his arms and reached up to kiss him. Her need crushed against his lips: determined, hungry, passionate.
He held her as the water ran over their bodies, his tongue striving with hers, his hands pressing her chest against his. But as she felt her loins ache, he broke off and stared down at her with a serious glint in his eyes.
His hand cupped her neck and his thumb brushed, gently, over the healing skin on her throat. She swallowed hard. All that makeup and he still noticed it.
He cocked his head. "What are you two caught up in?"
She lowered her eyes and bit her lip. This wasn't what she wanted to talk about, especially not now. With him. There would be enough trouble later. "It's not anything you should worry about."
"If I knew more, maybe I could help."
Idly she traced a finger around one of his tiny nipples. "It would put you in danger."
He laughed. "I'm used to that."
"They're strong. They have—" Her eyes closed as she tried not to tremble. "—dark powers."
His fingers gripped her chin and he forced her to look up. "I've dealt with that before."
She stared at him with confusion. His words were bold, and his face like stone. But she sensed the fear in him—she'd seen it before. It wasn't strong, more like a sheen of oil, just on the surface of his racing blood.
    "They could kill you."
"And I could die in a car crash." He smiled. "At least this way it would be worth
