he’s always touching you, kissing you, looking at you like he can’t wait to get you alone. You’ve been married for over twenty years and you act like you’re newlyweds.”
Nat laughed. “I have to admit, when Joe still lived at home, sometimes it got a little hard to have sex like we wanted but now that he’s working in
Tulsa, it’s been like starting over.”
She looked at Jesse and teased. “The three of you are going to have a lot of fun getting to know each other since your son and theirs are all away at school. When they come home for vacations, you’ll be so frustrated that when they leave again we probably won’t see you for days!”
Jesse smiled. “They told me about their boys this morning. They sound like good kids, but I can’t stay, Nat. Hey! Pull over!”
It looked perfect. As Nat stopped the car, Jesse scrambled out. Excited, she pulled Nat along when she joined her on the sidewalk.
“Look at this!” Jesse eyed the old building with awe. Cupping her hands around her face, she peered in the window.
With her mind racing, she pulled a small notebook from her purse and jotted down the number for the leasing agent.
“Jesse, what’s going on?” Nat looked from the quaint old building to her sister.
Jesse looked around, noting the parking available and the other shops in the area. She saw a florist, a woman’s apparel store, a beauty salon, a movie theater and a bank among others. Jake’s jewelry store stood on the corner.
She knew that the garage they had taken Nat’s car to stood only a few blocks away along with the market. It looked like a lovely town with clean sidewalks and flowers and trees planted everywhere.
“Jesse, damn it. What’s going on? What are you doing?” Nat demanded, grabbing her arm.
“Nat, what would you think of me moving here?” Jesse asked.
“Oh, honey! That would be wonderful! Do you mean it?” Nat laughed excitedly.
Jesse frowned. “I’m not sure that it’s going to work out with Clay and
Rio or not, but I think I like it here. Kelly would be safe.” She paced up and down the sidewalk as she thought about it.
“Nat, Kelly needs to get out of
Maryland
. The reason it took me so long to come visit is because Kelly’s ex boyfriend likes to show up now and then and beat on her.”
“What?” Nat gasped, outraged.
“Please don’t say anything to anyone. I don’t want everyone to know Kelly’s business.”
“Oh, no!” Nat assured her. “But if you can get her to move here, I want a front row seat if this asshole shows up thinking of hurting her.” Nat paced angrily. “Clay,
Rio and Jake would clean his clock, along with any other man around here.”
Jesse shook her head. “I don’t want anyone fighting. I don’t think he’ll come here. He’s a friend of Brian’s. That’s how Kelly and I met.”
Leaning against Jake’s truck, Jesse folded her arms. “I’ve managed to take care of him so far.”
“What do you mean?” Nat asked, frowning at her.
“He’s not very big, only a little taller than me. He’s also as lazy as Brian so he’s out of shape. I’ve worked like a dog for years doing my stuff and Brian’s. I’m in better shape than he is.” She shrugged. “Once when he came after Kelly, I happened to show up. He was surprised. I was pissed. I won. Since then, I make it my business to be around Kelly as much as possible. Every time he shows up, I’m there and I think he’s scared of me.”
Shaking her head, Jesse straightened. “I want to call the leasing agent. Then, I’ll talk to Kelly. I want to have a plan before calling her. Since Alex left, I’ve wanted to leave, but I just can’t leave Kelly alone. This may be my chance.”
“Oh, Jesse. It would be great if you could move here.” Jesse followed as Nat gestured toward the building. “This would be a great location for your business. There isn’t another business like it in town so you should be able to get approval. We don’t like it when a new
