small
head.
She was a phony, Reno decided.   She was one of those smiley-face fakers who’d
invite you to lunch and then, after you left, throw away the glass you drank
from.
“Y’all look so cute,” Blossom said, pointing
to their clothes.   “Red, white, and blue
jeans,” she said with a laugh.   “All-American.”
Reno gave Trina one of those what-the-fuck looks, but Trina smiled.   She was born in the south.   She had been around women like Blossom all
her life.
“We didn’t think about it that way,” Trina
said to Blossom, “but I guess you’re right.   Red, white and blue jeans.”   They both laughed.   It was, Trina thought, kind of clever.   And it demonstrated, Trina also thought, just
how much of a fish out of water Reno was going to be here in the south.   This, for him, would be like another world.
“So this is it?” Reno said, removing his
shades to get a better look at the house.   Blossom already could see he was a good looking man, but my goodness,
she thought, when he took off those shades.
“This is it,” she said.   “Four bedrooms and two
baths.   It’s a very lovely
home.   Care to see inside?”
The house had awning over the top windows that
gave it an almost cottage look, but he was still unimpressed.
“Care to look inside?” Blossom asked again.
“Yeah, why not,” he said, still staring up at
the monstrosity. He just couldn’t see allowing his wife to live in a place this
bland.
But just as they were about to go inside the
house, a Cadillac Escalade SUV drove up, and Sullivan
Chambliss stepped out.
Trina looked.   And he was a sight to behold.   He
wasn’t as muscular as Reno, but he had that tanned skin, that lean, sprinter’s body, that long, smooth neck and bright white smile that made
him look graceful.   Like Reno, he had
blue eyes, but unlike Reno, his hair was far shorter, and immaculate.
“Who’s that?” Trina found herself asking
Blossom.   Reno was curious, too.
“That’s Sully,” Blossom said as if his arrival
was a letdown.   “He owns Pride Realty,
the company I work for.   He’s the boss.”
Reno was the kind of man who didn’t understand
why the boss wasn’t here to greet him in the first place, but he dismissed such
thoughts.   This wasn’t Vegas.   He wasn’t the big man on this campus
here.   And he’d better get used to that
fact.
Sully buttoned his suit coat as he approached
the group.   “Mr. Gabrini,” he said as he
approached, his hand already extended.   “Welcome to Crane.”
“I’ve been here before, but thanks.” Reno
shook his hand.
“I’m Sullivan Chambliss of Pride Realty.   But everybody calls me Sully.   Nice to meet you.”
    “Same here.   And
everybody calls me Reno.”
Sully smiled.   “Reno, is it?   When you’re from
Vegas?”
Reno laughed.   “I was called Reno as a kid, before I moved to Vegas.”
    “Ah. I see.”
“I would like you to meet my wife, Sully,”
Reno said.   “Katrina Gabrini.”
“Pleasure to meet you, Mr. Sullivan.”
“Sully, please,” Sully said as he extended his
hand to Trina.   “And the pleasure’s all
mind.”
Trina smiled and shook his hand.
“We were just going inside, Sully,” Blossom
said. “To check it out.”
“Pleased with the outside so far?” Sully asked
Reno.
“Not really, no,” Reno said honestly, looking
back up at the house.   “I was expecting
something more. . .”
    “Elegant?” Sully helped him.
“Better than this,” Reno helped himself.   “It’ll be different if it was just me.   But I’ve got a wife here.   I’m not moving her into no dump.”
“A dump?” Blossom asked with a shocked smile.   Even
Trina had to smile at that.   “Why, this
is a gorgeous Cape Cod, Mr. Gabrini.   It’s the absolute best we have on the market right now.   It has four bedrooms.   It has two baths, my goodness!   And the previous owner spared no
expense.   Why you should see the
