her family,” Sevani finished.
“Why?” Ayah asked.
“Standard operations,” Valerie answered. “Anytime a murder is committed, it’s usually someone close to the victim that did it. We work with them first in our suspect pool. Once we’ve gone through and eliminated them, we begin to look for other sources. So tell me the members of your family.”
“I don’t think this is going to help, but okay. I have three older siblings, my sister, Taylor, and two older brothers, Aidan and George,” Ayah said.
“Anyone else?” Lei asked.
“Yes, I have an uncle, Ronald, and his son, Jean Pierre.”
“Any others in the immediate family?” he asked.
“No. We were a small, close-knit group. My mother passed away when I was young, and all that’s left is the five of them, my father, and me. My father just passed. The other people surrounding the family during this hard time have been my parents’ friends. We’ve been making do with what we have,” Ayah explained, growing sad at the thought of her father. She couldn’t believe that he was gone.
“Ayah’s father was the one that left her all his assets when he passed away,” Sevani explained.
“Oh, okay, do you have any idea why one of them would want to kill you, besides the money?” Valerie asked.
“No, none of them, we’ve all been very close. My sister is a surgeon, and her husband’s a doctor as well. My brother Aidan is a chiropractor, a very successful one, and his wife is a sous-chef. My other brother, George, is a traveling choreographer, and he’s handled some big names. Trust me, they aren’t hurting for money, and we have great relationships,” Ayah replied fiercely. She knew her family. They loved her. “Not only that,” she continued, “they were included in my father’s will. I just got the lion’s share.”
“And your uncle?” Lei asked.
“My uncle is the owner of Miller Global, a multimillion-dollar company. My father also gave all the remaining shares for the company to him and his son Jean Pierre. They’re richer than I am. They don’t need the money, and we’ve never had bad blood between us. I’m the new one to the rich pool. Like I said, you have to look somewhere else.”
Valerie shrugged at Ayah’s information. “I know this is hard for you,” she said. “We’re not trying to be difficult at all, believe us. This is just something that we deal with every day. This is no different than regular law enforcement inquiring about the details of your family in this type of case. It’s just procedure that we go through to help you survive.” Valerie smiled kindly.
“Let me explain something. Your life is in jeopardy. We are here to stop that from happening, but we must know everything. You must be completely honest. We cannot help you if you aren’t truthful with us. Are you sure there is no one in your family that would like to see you dead for the money?” Valerie asked.
“No, there is no one. I wish I could give you something else. Look, you guys have got to understand. I just learned there are immortal people in the world, I’m a millionaire, and my life is in danger in the span of twenty-four hours. On top of that, I just lost my father. All of this is pretty hard to understand. The only reason I believed Sevani is…” Ayah trailed off, not sure she wanted to explain why she knew Sevani. “Well, we know why I believed him. Just give me some time. If there is anything else that I can think of, then I will be sure to let you know.”
“And that’s all we ask,” Sevani said then. “I think you should rest, though. It’s been a hard night for all of us, and we’re going to be doing some manual labor to get your house prepared. It’s for your protection.”
“I don’t think I could possibly sleep. I can help out with whatever you need. It doesn’t seem like you brought many things with you,” Ayah responded looking at Valerie, Lei, and Alexander’s empty hands.
“You should have more
