for the rest of the week they enjoyed each other’s company immensely.

Angelica continued to pop in but there were no more awkward moments with Evan and Holly. She did consider introducing him to her parents but in the end she decided that it could wait because she didn’t want to put any undue pressure on him, and she wanted to cement their relationship first. They hadn’t spoken of anything serious yet because she wanted to let things develop naturally between them, and she could tell that despite his macho bravado Colton was quite vulnerable and she didn’t want to scare him off.

Instead she let things run their natural course. They made new plans every day for fun things to do, and he promised that if she wanted to travel he could arrange for them to go to various countries. He and Glenn were both humble but Colton loved living off the land and Ana found this to be appealing.

She was so joyously happy and whenever Angelica saw her she commented on this new change and how wonderful it was. She also said that she had taken a leaf out of Ana’s book and had spoken to the guy she was in love with, and had told him that she was planning to go back over there.

Upon telling him this, he was happy and said that he was only dating the other girl because he felt that he had to move on. The heartbreak was too intense and he wanted to try and forget her but it didn’t work, and they had started making plans for things to do together as soon as they saw each other. It also meant that it gave her extra impetus to save up money and she was determined to move out with Ana soon.

They spoke about it excitedly and they decided that as soon as they could arrange it they would move to Newtown. Ana had been ready for this step for a while, and now that she was seeing Colton she wanted to be nearer to him. She imagined that her weeks could be spent enjoying the city and on the weekends she could go to his cabin, and she was already starting to envisage it. It filled her up with a calm warmth as she thought about everything they could do together, and although she tried to restrain herself from getting too worked up over things that had yet to be decided, she allowed herself to get carried away just a little bit.

However, when the weekend came Ana woke to find her bed empty. She reached around to try and search for him but there was no sign. She called out but he had disappeared, and when Angelica came out of her room she found that Ana was a wreck and about to collapse in tears. She searched all around the room for a note or some sign of where he went but there was nothing. The week had been perfect but it had ended in a nightmare.

“How could I have been so stupid?” she asked through mournful sobs. “I really thought he was being honest but he’s just as bad as Glenn. What is it about them? Why did they have to torture me so much? Wasn’t it enough the first time? Why did he spend a week with me and say all those things and then just leave? He’s a monster,” she cried.

Angelica didn’t have an answer to those questions so she held her friend close and tried to provide a soothing voice, but nothing could comfort Ana who kept wailing against the cosmos.

“I was falling in love with him and he just left. How could he do that to me? Did I just mean nothing to him? After everything that we shared? After all the time we spent together?”

Her eyes stung and her heart broke inside, this time she was sure it had broken for good and there was no way that she could ever repair it. Tears stung her eyes and her throat was raw from crying. Her body shook and shuddered and Angelica brought out hot chocolate and ice cream. The hours went by but Ana didn’t calm down. Instead her emotional pain hardened her heart and turned it into a bitter angry.

She clenched her fists and her tears became drops of pure fury, steaming as they left her boiling body. Her eyes narrowed with rage and her
