defensively. Damn it, it was going to be hard to investigate covertly with her here in the cabin – but her being anywhere else suddenly felt wrong. Unthinkable. Out of the question.
She glanced around, looking puzzled. “Well, you’re alone in the room, and I heard the sounds of people having sex, very loudly. And the walls of these cabins are pretty thick, from what I gather, so the noise isn’t coming from any of the other rooms.”
“Uh – I was enjoying myself while I imagined you showering?” Heath suggested.
“No you weren’t. There was the sound of a woman too. I’m not against porn, for heaven’s sake. Let me see.”
She walked over and tried to open the laptop. Heath kept his hand pressed down on it.
“I demand to see what your taste in porn is,” she said. “Hey, I might learn some new tricks.”
That sounded quite all right to Heath, but he still didn’t want her to see what he was watching.
She raised an eyebrow. “What?” she asked suspiciously. “Is it really weird? Are there fetishes that have no name, are there midgets and circus clowns? Please, no circus clowns – they really freak me out.”
He choked on a laugh, then quickly grew serious again. He was going to have to trust her to some extent. He had a feeling, deep down to the bone, that he really could trust her.
“Here,” he said, and opened the laptop.
“You pervert! You’re spying on Reshef?” Her eyes opened wide. Then she leaned closer. “I mean, I’ll grant you, that is kinda hot. Wow, they’re just having a big ol’ orgy, aren’t they? Look, that’s the bodyguard who approached us at the table. He’s got three girls at once. He doesn’t even know where to put his hands. And Reshef’s under a pile of – you know what, no! This is wrong!”
She tore her gaze away from the screen.
“I’m not saying I mind watching this, but it’s actually part of my job.” At her skeptical look, he raised his hands defensively. “I swear on a stack of Bibles. Scout’s honor.”
“You’ll have to do better than that. I am positive you were never a Boy Scout, and a stack of Bibles? Really? Is that better than swearing on one Bible, somehow?”
“Swear to me that this is all off the record, and that you will not discuss this with anyone.”
She nodded. “I swear. On one single Bible, not a whole stack.”
He let out a heavy sigh. “He’s potentially the target of an assassination. I’m here to keep an eye on him. I take turns mingling with guests and trying to keep an eye out for anything suspicious, and watching this video feed. I’m alternating with a few of my teammates. You can watch with me, if you want. It’s not the worst thing in the world; I’ve had much worse surveillance jobs, believe me.”
“But why not just warn him?” She sat down on the chair next to him and he swallowed hard and tried to resist the temptation to tear the towel off her. He had at least a couple of hours more of watching the video feed, until Reshef left his room, or one of the other operatives from Shifters, Inc. relieved him. He’d just have to suffer through being rock-hard for the next couple of hours until he was freed from his duties, and then he’d tear off whatever she was wearing and show her, yet again, how incredibly sexy he found her.
“Because we’re not completely sure he’s the target. There are several other options. Benedetta is one of them.”
“Oh no.” Tonya looked alarmed. “Benedetta can’t be assassinated.
