sure,” Ed said, smoothing his napkin on

his lap. He was staring at Jonathan, but talking to everyone. “I’m licensed to practice here.

I took care of that ahead of time. But I haven’t given it much thought. I think what I’d

really like to do is open a non-profit free clinic for dogs and cats that need to get spayed

and neutered. There’s a real problem with overpopulation.”

Jonathan’s eyes grew wide and he tilted his head to the side fast. “I think that’s

absolutely wonderful.” He looked into Ed’s eyes, lifted his fork slowly, and placed the

pumpkin pie inside his mouth. Then he licked his lips and started chewing.

“You do?” Ed asked. Jonathan nodded yes. His mouth was full and his lips were moving.

Lisa and the other guys started talking about the benefits of rescuing a pet from a

shelter, and Noah moved his fork around in circles as if he were playing with a toy

airplane. But Ed couldn’t take his eyes off Jonathan’s mouth. He felt a tug between his

legs and his penis started to grow. Jonathan chewed like he gave head: his lips puffed out

and the sides of his face indented. Ed wanted to pull down his zipper and cover his dick

with pumpkin pie so Jonathan could lick it all off with his tongue.

When it was finally time to leave, Ed thanked both Frank and Greg and promised

to invite them to his first party when the house was finished. They seemed like nice

enough guys, but Ed couldn’t leave fast enough. He didn’t like the way they’d slithered

up to Jonathan all afternoon. Lisa and Noah wouldn’t have noticed this, but Ed knew how

to spot their kind from miles away. They’d paid Jonathan extra compliments in a passive

aggressive way. Frank had asked him how often he worked out to keep such a fantastic

body. Greg kept touching the skin on his arm, telling him it was so soft and smooth. Ed

caught them both staring at Jonathan’s ass more than once when no one was looking.

Oh, Ed knew what those two were up to. He and Jake had had a few gay friends

who had been together as couples for years who’d done this sort of thing all the time. For

some, it became a hobby. When they saw a good-looking young guy like Jonathan, it

meant fresh meat, and their first instinct was to seduce him into a three-way.

So when Frank gave Greg a knowing look as they were all leaving and said,

“Jonathan, would you like to stay for a while and watch a movie with us?” Ed stepped

forward and said, “He can’t. He has to call his boyfriend in England in about fifteen

minutes.” It was none of his business what Jonathan did, but the words just popped out of

his mouth.

“I do?” Jonathan said. His head jerked back and he stared at Ed with large eyes.

Everyone stared at Ed. So he laughed and said, “Maybe I made a mistake. I

thought you mentioned earlier that you were calling Mike in England tonight.” Ed wasn’t

even sure what time it was in England, but it was too late to stop now.

“Ah well,” Jonathan said. “You’re right. I almost forgot. I do have to call Mike.

He’s on a weird time schedule, and this is the only time I’ll be able to get him for the next

week.” Then he lowered his eyebrows and stared at Ed with a confused expression.

“You have a boyfriend?” Frank asked. “I didn’t know you had a boyfriend.” He

looked at his partner, Greg, and frowned.

“Oh yes,” Noah said, “His name is Mike and he even gave him a mocambo

watch.”

“Movado,” Jonathan said.

“Yeah, Movado,” Noah said. He slipped out the front door and started running in

circles. He made fists and pointed his index fingers as if he were shooting guns. A pshew

sound came from his lips.

Lisa just stood there with her arms folded across her chest, waiting to see what Ed

would say next.

“Well, thanks guys,” Ed said,
