Mall Madness
C heck it out, you guys!â nine-year-old Frank Hardy said. âSoon weâre going to meet the Crawler in the flesh!â
â Green flesh!â Frankâs eight-year-old brother, Joe, said with a grin.
It was Saturday morning. Frank and Joe were at the Bayport Mall. The boysâ friends Chet and Iola Morton were also there, along with about a hundred other kids.
They werenât at the mall to see the new electronic games or sneaker styles. They were there to meet the most awesome superhero, the Green Crawler!
âDo you think the Crawler will do what he does in the movies?â Chet asked, digging into a bag of Cheesy Curls.
âYou mean grow extra legs five times the normal size?â Iola asked. âAnd climb walls and ceilings faster than a spider?â
âSure,â Frank said. âAs long as Mo Mantis doesnât try to stop him.â
Chet let out a âBoo!â Mo Mantis was the Green Crawlerâs biggest enemy. Mo was part human, part praying mantis, and his dream was to destroy the Green Crawler. Thanks to the Crawler, it was a dream that never came true.
âRemember,â Iola said. âWeâre not here just to see the Crawler. Weâre here to find out who won the contest!â
âHow could we forget?â Joe said. âWe all drew a picture of the Green Crawler. And the kid with the best picture wins the big prize,â he went on. âA chance to march with the Green Crawler balloon in the Fall Fest parade.â
The Fall Fest parade happened every October in Bayport. It had floats and the high school marching band, plus one supersize balloon.
âIâve always wanted to be one of those balloon handlers,â Chet said, and sighed. He crossed his cheesy fingers. âI hope I win.â
âMe too,â Joe said. He pulled something from his back pocket. It looked like a green claw on a stick. âThatâs why I brought this.â
âWhat is it?â Iola asked, wrinkling her nose.
âItâs my Green Crawler snapping claw!â Joe said, squeezing the handle to make it open and close. âThe Green Crawler is the only one who can use Mo Mantisâs own claw against him. Itâs also my lucky charm!â
âYou donât need luck to win this contest, Joe,â Frank said. âJust the best drawing of the Green Crawler.â
Joe pictured himself as a balloon handler. Neat! But then he had a scary thought . . .
âWhat if the balloon picks me up and carries me away?â Joe asked. âIâm just a kid!â
âThe other handlers will all be grown-ups,â Frank said with a chuckle. âThatâs what it said in the rules.â
âHopefully, big and strong grown-ups,â Chet said. âI heard the Green Crawler balloon is humongous!â
They were about to move closer to the stage when a bunch of voices began shouting: âWe want Nutty! We want Nutty back in the parade!â
âWho are they?â Chet asked as some kids marched by holding signs. âAnd why are they wearing squirrel hats?â
âItâs the Nutty the Squirrel fan club,â Frank explained.
âYou mean that cartoon squirrel?â Iola asked. âThe Nutty the Squirrel balloon was in the parade two years in a row.â
âThatâs why the fan club is here, I guess,â Frank decided. âThey want the Nutty balloon back in the parade.â
âThey can dream on,â Chet declared. âThe Green Crawler wipes the floor with that Nutty the Squirrel!â
âShh!â Iola warned. âThey might hear you!â
Too late. The fans stopped shouting. A boy wearing glasses and the biggest squirrel hat glared at Chet as he walked over.
âHere comes Sammy Kernkraut,â Joe murmured. âHeâs the president of the Nutty club.â
âHow do you know?â Frank asked.
âHeâs in my class,â Joe
