his
hand to calm him. “Please cousin. Our needs must come last this sorrowful day.”
    Spike
blinked. He lowered the gun.
    Brad turned
back to the car. “I’m Thunder Brad, as I may have said earlier. This is my
cousin Spike. All we want to do is rescue Jasmine while there’s still time.
Will you help us or not?”
    The man
sighed. He looked back to the girl. “If they know where she is…”
    The girl
scrunched her face up. “I’ll never forgive them for what they did,” she
whispered.
    “But we
should work together for now…”
    “For now?”
    “For now.”
    The man
turned back. “I’m Dennis. This is my girlfriend Dara. If you have the address
I’ll drive you there. Get in the back. Just don’t speak to Dara as you’ll upset
her.”
    “Too late for
that,” Spike said marching past Brad, and getting into the car.

    CHAPTER
FOURTEEN

Gabe had been sleazing onto her a
bit, but never laid more than a suggestive tone of voice on her. Not long after
their first glass of wine he became distracted with a heated phone call, and
soon departed the room.
    “I won’t be
too long,” he said before going. “If you’re bored there’s books, TV do whatever
you want.”
    And then
Jasmine was left alone. The obvious thing for her to first try was an attempt
at escape. Unfortunately even as she came close to the door, she could hear the
other bears still lurking the corridor, talking in a vulgar manner. Then she
felt a pain in her stomach. She went to the bathroom to freshen up.
    It had been a
rough day, that was for sure. She’d been dragged from one extreme to the next.
Being left alone now, facing herself in the mirror, she knew there were things
that she didn’t want to think about, but were fighting for control of her mind.
There was a reason Jasmine had been so free and happy with the bear kings that
was deeper than just the instinctual attraction.
    Two months
ago, Jasmine’s best friend Stacey Caversham, had met with a dragon shifter
named Zane and fallen in love, deeper than either of them could have imagined.
Seeing her with Zane on the day of the wedding, she had been so happy, so on
top of the world, that Jasmine couldn’t let it show how it made her feel deep
down. As happy as she was for Stacey, the wedding had reawakened a lost
appetite for love Jasmine had buried years ago. While a man could be flawed, a
shifter could be flawless. And now she had two of these type of men pursuing
her, and the pain of losing them hurt like no other…
    Jasmine
closed her eyes. She didn’t want to cry. Now she had been honest with herself
about her feelings she could also feel the presence of evil again, the dark
secret of her past she knew she could never tell her bears about. She wanted to
forget it. She had to forget it.
    But as she
looked up to her reflection in the mirror, she could hear that baby’s cry
again…
    And its cry
was not human…
    The bathroom
door opened.
    Gabe stood
behind her, looking solemn.
    “What are you
doing?” he asked.
    “Nothing,” Jasmine
said, grabbing a towel to wipe her tears.
    “You have to
be stronger than this,” Gabe said.
    Jasmine
leaned over the sink and ran the faucet.
    She splashed
her face with water. “I am stronger.”
    “Pleased to
hear that,” Gabe said. “When you’re finished, come meet me out here. Hades
wants to speak with you.”

FIFTEEN

He was waiting for her in the next
room. Jasmine hadn’t expected it – she thought she’d be led somewhere else to
meet with him, but no here he was. She wondered what he wanted from her.
    “I have been
speaking with our prisoners of the Uthuro tribe,” Hades said as she entered.
“They have explained to me that the bear kings have become passive. They are
entrenched in the old ways of peace and meager livings. I suspect that even if
they were keen, they might not be suited to the Destair after all.”
    Jasmine’s
fingers interlocked. She felt so out of place.
    “Then
