building all those skyscrapers when we have such beauty here.” He turned to her and he looked just as handsome in daylight as he did in the dim light of the bar. He apologized again for the previous night and said that he had some urgent business to take care of.

“I suppose that’s another reason why I haven’t settled down yet. It’s hard to find a wife when you have to spend so much time working. It’s a shame Colton can’t take any responsibility,” he said.

“What is the story between you two anyway?” she asked innocuously. Glenn paused for a moment and looked out at the lake.

“That is a long story. Suffice to say that we have two different ways of looking at the world. But we’re family, and we have to stick together. Now, I’d rather not spend this lovely morning talking about my cousin. I’d much rather talk about you.”

He held out his arm in a gentlemanly manner and Ana smiled. She gladly took it and they strolled along. She told him all about her life and found herself speaking about things she hadn’t even realized she remembered. He listened intently and asked the right questions at the right time. Eventually she started to talk about how her aunt had told her magical creatures lived in the woods. She expected him to laugh at her innocent stupidity but instead his eyes glazed over.

“Do you not think it’s funny?” she asked.

“I just think there are certain things about this world that can’t be explained. I think it’s arrogant to assume that we can know everything. I’m not saying that pixies and imps started dancing at midnight, but there are some things in this world that are difficult to explain. I’m certainly no expert but I don’t think we should close our minds to the mysteries of the world.”

He let his arm fall down and he took her hand in his and squeezed. It was a comfortable feeling and it felt completely natural being with him. The rhythm of conversation was easy and although they barely knew each other there was no awkwardness at all.

“I must be boring you by now,” she said at one point after she had been talking for what seemed like hours.

“Not at all,” he said, turning to look deeply into her eyes.

“You’re not like the usual women I meet. Most of them are only interested in money. You have…substance about you. It’s nice, it’s refreshing. I find myself drawn to you,” he said.

His hand caressed the side of her face and he brushed a few errant strands of hair away from her full cheeks. It felt like they were in a world of their own. She gazed up into his eyes and in them she saw a universe filled with possibilities. He looked so much like Colton, and for an instant her mind flashed back to the intense delight of the previous night, but then he smiled and all she saw was Glenn.

He leaned in and they kissed. His arms wrapped around her, drawing her into him as their lips met. It was sweet and tender, unlike the raw, fiery kisses she had enjoyed with Colton, but it was something she knew she could rely on…and something she could get used to for the rest of her life.

The kiss kept going and going and when they broke away they were both smiling. They linked hands together and continued strolling along the boardwalk. Ana rested her head against his shoulder as they walked and sighed contentedly. No more words needed to be spoken. The kiss had told her everything she needed to know.

Chapter 7

The day had gone all too swiftly and Ana found herself in her room once again. After their stroll Glenn had to go and make an appearance with the rest of the wedding guests to speak of his well wishes. It had been hard to let him go again but they had exchanged numbers and planned to meet in Newtown soon.

It felt like her life was taking an exciting turn and she was glad she had decided to take the opportunity her aunt had given her. There was something about this lakeside retreat that had
