multiple rectangular red marks on her small, white behind. She screamed and threatened and struggled, but still he spanked until he heard tears in her voice. He paused.
     
    “ Now we’re ready to start your lesson,” he told her.
     
    “ You’ve already spanked me,” she whined, sniffing.

    Lucas gave her a hard slap with the implement and she cried out. “For pouting and disrespect,” he reminded her. “Now tell me why you’re being punished?”

    Lucas kept up his steady rhythm while Alyssa screamed and wiggled frantically. Every ten strokes or so he asked her why she was being punished. He wanted this lesson securely rooted in her psyche.
     
    Her bottom was solidly pink and deepening into rose. Her screams had become hoarse cries and her struggles weak, yet Lucas continued to work wisdom into his wife. “Why are you being punished?” he asked.
     
    Alyssa was about out of breath. “Lu...cas...pout...ing...dis...re...spect...please...I’m sorry...I’m so sorry...”
     
    It was the first time she’d apologized. She was almost there. He continued to swat her, not lessening the force or the pace. She was making pitiful noises that sounded like a wounded animal, and she’d stopped her struggles. The slap, slap, slap of the Wisdom Worker rang out louder than anything else in the truck.
     
    “ Why are you being punished?”
     
    “ P...pouting and dis...re...spect...” she sobbed, “Never...again...promise. Pleeeeaaasse...”
     
    Her bottom was now a solid shade of rose from top to bottom. Lucas felt she’d learned her lesson, so he stopped the strokes. Alyssa lay limp across his knees.
     
    “ I want you to remember this, Alyssa, because I don’t ever want to have to do it again.”
     
    She nodded, and then groaned when he pulled her panties up over her sore bottom and pushed her skirt down. She sat sobbing in her seat while he belted her in. He handed her a Kleenex from the visor and put the truck into gear. For several miles he listened to her sniff and whimper and hiccough, his stomach clenched. What happened next, once she’d gotten control of her emotions, would determine the rest of his life.
     
    “ Lucas?” she finally said in a tear-filled voice.
     
    “ Yes?”
     
    “ May I...do you mind if I...move over into the middle seat?”
     
    He looked at her. Her nose was reddened and pieces of hair were still wet from tears, but her eyes were wide and filled with desperate need. He felt around under the backend of the seat and pulled the safety belt from underneath. “Come on,” he told her. “Do it fast.”
     
    She unbuckled, scooted with a wince, and buckled herself quickly into the middle seat. Driving with his left arm, he put his right arm around his wife. She curled against him, sighed, and went to sleep.
     
    He smiled. It seemed he’d found the secret to marital contentment.
