everything about etiquette,â Maralys said. âShe could set up one hell of a consulting business.â
âBut the choice should be hers,â Zach said, speaking emphatically. âI didnât think it would matter that much to any of us and I wanted her to be without worries.â
âIt didnât matter to me,â James acknowledged. âOr to Philippa. And Matt is okay with the pay out scheme you devised for him buying our shares of Grey Gables. But are you okay with it, Zach?â
âWho cares?â Zach tried to shrug off the question with a grin. âI land on my feet.â
â I care,â James said with force. âIf you need cash, you come to me first.â
It was an unexpected offer and it surprised Zach. âI donât need much,â he said but got no further.
âI know youâre frugal,â James said, interrupting him. âBut I donât want you to feel that you have to go back to selling to make ends meet.â
âIâm done with that.â
âGood. But if you need a loan, this branch of the Bank of Coxwell is open. Iâm your big brother and Iâm running late on taking up that responsibility.â
âWell, I donât know. Youâve already saved my butt a bunch of times. Thanks for that.â
âNew start?â James asked, offering his hand.
Zach smiled, genuinely pleased. âOkay. Thanks. New start.â The two brothers shook hands, sealing this unexpected accord.
For the first time in his life, Zach felt attacked by warm-fuzzies in the presence of his family.
Maybe he should have gotten decked sooner.
Then Maralys shooed James out the door. âYouâre late, Mr. Coxwell. I promise to tell you all the juicy details tonight, if there are any. Letâs have a quick review before you go.â
James paused on the walk and started to tick items off with his fingers. âOkay, official synchronization: Zoë and I are on the road tonight. Soccer for Jimmy at six-thirty; swimming for Johnny at seven; pick them up at eight and eight-fifteen respectively; pick up your father from euchre at the community center at eight-thirty; everyone back here for the bath and tooth brushing routine, then Iâll see you at Casa Pickle at nine-thirty.â
âI didnât know you were domesticated,â Zach teased, getting his own back.
James grinned. âYou bet.â
âIt can be done,â Maralys intoned. âWe have the technology to harness the wild Coxwell male...â
The two exchanged another one of those hot looks and Zach cleared his throat lest they go at it on the porch. âWhatâs Casa Pickle?â
âMaralysâ studio and office,â James said. âIt used to be a pickle factory.â
âNo kidding?â
âNo kidding. When the humidity is right, you can smell the vinegar.â Maralys grimaced. âBut the space is phenomenal.â
âEven with Antonia making art all around you,â James joked.
âIâm getting used to it.â Maralys smiled, then shooed him away. âSynchronization right the first time, counselor. Youâre clear for takeoff.â Maralys waved at James, then nudged Zach. âThereâs that incisive Coxwell legal mind at work again.â
James turned and shook a finger at her. âYouâd better be ready to leave by nine-thirty, Maralys. Tonight Iâll need a glass of wine, with you and no computer code.â
âTen.â
âNine-thirty.â
âDefinitely by nine-forty-five.â
James heaved a sigh of forbearance. âWell, Iâll just have to change your mind.â He winked when she laughed, then strode toward the T.
âDoesnât that sound promising,â Maralys said, her eyes dancing with anticipation. âFunny how you donât find your brother persuasive. I find him irresistible.â
âThatâs probably a good thing,â Zach
