High Voltage
alright.”
    Then the wise traitor promptly
disappeared from the table.
Damn. Where the hell was Havoc when
they needed him? The man was nearly forty minutes late now. Eager to escape the
violence that was going to erupt, Gale fled into the kitchen where Heath was
preparing dessert. He’d always been the one to part his two volatile brothers,
and he was getting sick of it.
“Sorry. Volt was supposed to get
the chicken,” Heath said apologetically.
Gale wasn’t about to ask if the
apprentice was going to feed them the ghastly looking cake he was topping
bananas with. He wasn’t sure if it was supposed to be chocolate or something
else entirely.
“Typical, Volt.” Gale leaned against the counter. “Volt’s being more intolerable than usual
actually, which means you’re doing something right.”
Heath’s cheeks grew pink, but Gale
could see Heath was pleased by the remark. He’d been worried for a while that Heath
leaving them would create an irreparable hole in the family, and Gale always
placed priority on family.
    “Yeah, we’re good.” Heath
hesitated, and then asked, “How are you and Havoc?”
    Gale grimaced, not surprised Heath
knew. The apprentice was more observant and sensitive than the rest of them gave
him credit for. Volt was really one lucky bastard.
    “Same old, same
old. It’s nothing, Heath. What we have is nothing. We’re just fooling
around.” Gale was surprised by how bitter he sounded.
“Doesn’t sound like nothing to me.”
Heath raised his hands when Gale was about to correct him. “Hey, it’s none of
my business.”
“Havoc is a complicated man.” Gale
let out a sound of frustration. “He’s incapable of letting go of his past and
that means he’s incapable of seeing what’s in front of him.”
    He was surprised when the
apprentice patted his shoulder.
“Then make him see. Volt’s the same
way. It’s why the two of them need men like us to convince them.”
Gale wasn’t sure when Heath had
gotten so wise.
    Heath picked up his hideous
creation and began to head out of the kitchen. “Are you coming, Gale? You
wouldn’t want to miss out on my world renowned chocolate cake.”
He didn’t want to hurt Heath by
asking in which world exactly was his cake renown , so
he was glad for his ringing cell. Seeing Havoc’s name, he answered the call,
not bothering to conceal his annoyance.
    “Havoc, where the
hell are you? Its chaos here and—”
“This isn’t Havoc, but to whom am I
speaking to?” The unfamiliar cultured voice stopped Gale cold.
Who the hell was holding Havoc’s
phone?
    “This is Gale. Who
the fuck is this?”
    “There isn’t time for
introductions. Gale, you’re one of Havoc’s kids, yes? You need to pay
attention, Gale, and speak of this to no one except your brothers. Havoc is
currently under the custody of the City Council.”
Gale’s pulse began to race. “What’s
Havoc being arrested for?”
    “For the murder
of one of the council’s members. I’ll explain later. You need to come to
council’s headquarters.”
Gale quickly wrote down the address
and exited the kitchen. Blaze and Volt were in the midst of hurling balls of
electricity and fire at each other, but they stopped at his expression. The
three of them may occasionally have their differences, but when important shit
went down, they had each other’s backs.
“Gale, what happened?” Blaze asked, expression concerned.
“It’s Havoc. He’s being tried for
the murder of a council member. If he’s found guilty, the sentence is
execution,” Gale answered numbly.
