back from me again?” she asked.
Tate sighed and looked out the window. “I should,” he said closing his eyes and leaning his head back as if he was in pain.
Jane banged her head against the steering wheel before starting the car. Tate gave her terse instructions and they reached Kam’s house within minutes. She ignored Tate and got out of the car, walking around to the trunk to get her cooler of cupcakes out. Tate moved her gently aside and picked up the heavy cooler for her, carrying it easily around the house and to the backyard.
Jane stared miserably at Tate’s back but smiled as her name was called out. Meredith ran to her side and dragged her to one of the long tables already filled with food.
“Look at my cake! Doesn’t it look amazing?” she whispered gesturing toward the slightly lopsided creation.
Jane hugged her friend. “It’s going to taste even better. Help me set out the cupcakes,” she said and bent down to grab the trays.
Meredith helped her organize the cupcakes onto a special display rack. On the last and smallest tier, she put a large, oversized cupcake, so decadent looking it made all other cupcakes pale in comparison.
Tate walked over and stood next to her looking suspicious. He stared at the large cupcake with narrowed eyes. “That’s it huh? That’s the sabotage you were talking about. I think I’ll take that right now,” he said and grabbed the cupcake and walked away with it.
Meredith’s mouth fell open and Jane squawked in protest. She ran after him, but he was faster. “Stop that man!” she yelled, as he sped up. People laughed and grinned at them, but made no effort to stop Tate. “Tate, I swear, if you don’t give me back that cupcake I’m going to kill you with my bare hands,” she yelled, as he made a quick turn and headed back through the crowds.
Jane finally stopped and glared at Tate as he disappeared into the house, no doubt to flush her cupcake down the toilet. He. Was. Dead .
“Hey Cupcake. What are you doing chasing Tate around the yard? You’re supposed to be chasing me,” came a smooth low voice behind her.
Jane groaned and turned around to see Kam smiling teasingly down at her. He’d obviously showered and changed and was now wearing a lava-lava. It looked like a skirt to be honest, but it looked anything but feminine on Kam’s powerful body.
“Tate snagged a special cupcake I made just for you. It was your favorite. Banana with cream cheese,” she said, gleefully watching as Kam’s eyes turned cold and dangerous as he glanced toward the house in the direction Tate had disappeared.
“Oh he did, did he? Well, he’ll have to pay for that. Did you bring anymore?” he asked, slinging his arm around her shoulders and walking back toward the tables with her.
Jane cleared her throat and gestured toward the cupcakes still left. None of which had been sabotaged unfortunately. She saw Meredith standing proudly by her cake and she grinned.
“Kam, look at that gorgeous cake Meredith made. Did you know she can cook?” she asked, slipping out from Kam’s arm and moving to stand next to her friend.
Meredith blushed bright red and stepped away from the cake so Kam could see it. “It’s red velvet Kam. Would you like to try a piece?” she asked hopefully.
Kam stared at the cake and then glanced longingly at the multi-colored cupcakes looking gorgeous in their setting.
Jane took the decision out of his hand and took a knife, cutting a large piece for him and placing it
