the bitch finally let me go. In a state of shock, she just stood there as I turned to head towards the bus. I would get my son and we would be gone. She would just have to wait a damn minute. A frantic Layla was standing at the open door of the bus.
“What the hell is going on Avery? Are you okay? I heard a gunshot and now a bunch of sirens. What the fuck am I missing?”
“Ben will explain when he gets back Layla. I need to get Hunter and then I’ve got to split. I’m headed home where its safe. I can’t stay here and put everyone in danger. With the commotion going on out front I should be able to put a good amount of distance between here and there before they realize Madison and I aren’t on our way to the hospital,” I told her quickly. I walked in the bus to find Hunter curled up in his favorite blanket on their couch. I wasted no time scooping my boy up in my arms to carry him out. I began walking back towards a now quiet Layla who was still standing in front of the door to the bus waiting for me.
“I’ll call you as soon as I get there. I promise everything will be okay. If anyone ask we took off in the middle of the night leaving you a note telling you I quit. Now if you have any loose cash around here that would be great being I can’t go back over to my bus to collect my things.”
Layla went down the hall to her bedroom. When she came back it was with a wad of cash. “Take it. I’m not sure how much is here but it should be enough to get you where you need to go,” Layla said as she pulled me and a sleeping Hunter in for a hug. After kissing us both on the forehead she pulled back for her last words. “Be careful. Watch out for my little dude and I will be to visit once the coast is clear. I love you, girl, both of you. If you need anything at all you call us. Now get your ass out of here before the pigs’ start snooping around for witnesses.”
“I love you too,” I said slipping out the door. I stayed close to the bus as I walked over to the car. Madison was already in the passenger seat. I opened the driver’s side door while Madison pushed the seat forward. For now, I just lay a sleeping Hunter across the back seat. When we stop I’ll wake him to buckle him in but not now.
With Hunter in the backseat I jumped up front. I turned the key in the ignition and took the back way out of the arena. Madison was silent for what felt like an eternity. When I finally made it to the interstate I couldn’t take it anymore. “Say something dammit. I can’t do the silent treatment.”
“I thought you said there was no one else but my brother Avery. You lied to me. Why would you lie? Hell, why did you stay away with a kid that no one knows about? Did you think we wouldn’t support you? If you did, you need your fucking head examined.” Madison said quietly as to not wake Hunter.
“That’s not exactly why I stayed away. There’s more to it than that. I just couldn’t. All hell is going to break loose when we get back and he’s going to be caught up right in the middle of it. I’ve tried to keep him away from the drama that will come. I’m not sure when you get a good look at him if you’ll be so inclined to help me Madison. Just promise me you will let me explain everything before you lose your cool. I don’t want him seeing that shit.”
“I might be a lot of things but I’m not reckless enough to flip in front of kids if I can help it. Now how bout you get to the explaining part of this conversation. We’ve got at least a four-hour ride. That’s plenty of time for you to fill me in.”
Here goes nothing. With my eyes on the road and steering wheel in hand I took a deep breath before spilling my best kept secret. “I wasn’t lying when I said Braxton has been my one and only. Hunter is your nephew Madison”.

After the day’s events to say I was exhausted would be an understatement. I’ve been up for almost two days straight only catching a nap slumped
