things into a small suitcase. âIâm no savior. Iâm not what these Ancients need. You know it as much as I do.â
Eden had tried to be brave, and Roseâs heart went out to her. But maybe the girl was right. Mkomboziâs essence may have been reborn into this childâs body, but it hadnât been reborn to live out its destiny, at least not in this life.
âStopping you is the last thing I would try and do, MyEden,â she said, sadly, walking over to Eden and taking hold of her hands.
Tears streamed down the girlâs face in rivers, and all of a sudden, to Rose, Eden looked like she was six years old again. âItâs over,â she said, sounding so defeated. âThe police are going to be looking for me. Iâm all over the news, the Internetâ¦â She shrugged. âI killed that guy,â she said remorsefully. âI canât explain how I did it, Rose. I just got so angry and I hated those men for what they were trying to do to me. Itâs only a matter of time before they find me, MyRose. And whatâs going to happen when they do? What will I do to the police if they find me?â
The authorities were the least of the challenges facing this young woman, and still, she couldnât see it, but Rose could.
Eden sat down wearily on the side of the bed, pulling Rose down next to her. âI have tried to understand the things youâve told me all my life, MyRose,â she sobbed. âBelieve me, Iâve tried, but I never wanted to be her. Iâve never wanted to have to see and do the things she did, because to me, Iâm just Eden.â She stared helplessly back at Rose. âIâm me.â
âAnd you are, Eden,â Rose said, tenderly. âIâve always understood that, and Iâve always tried to do my best to prepare you, but Iâm afraid Iâve failed you.â She pressed her hand to Edenâs cheek. Rose hadnât realized that she had started crying, too.
âItâs all so impossible to believe,â Eden said, swallowing, struggling to compose herself. âIâm notâthat person, that being. Iâm not her, MyRose. I canât be, becauseâ¦â
âBecause youâre afraid to be,â Rose said, finishing her thought for her.
Eden nodded. âWho would want to be that? I killed that man as easily as Iâd swat a fly.â
âThey attacked you, Eden!â
âThey fuckinâ did!â Eden shot back angrily. But just as quickly, she suppressed it. âThey deserved to be punished, but not like that, Rose.â Eden grimaced. âI did things to them that ⦠I tortured them. No matter how I try to forget that, I canât. I punished them in a way that was cruel and evil. If thatâs what this Mkombozi is like, then why would I want to be her?â
Rose resisted the urge to tell her that she was trapped into a fate that she couldnât escape. Edenâs choices had been taken from her by Khale the moment the Ancient Shifter had decided to reincarnate Mkomboziâs essence into that newborn infant.
Defeat washed over Edenâs expression as she wiped away her tears with the back of her hand. âI have to go,â she said sadly.
Rose nodded and smiled. âOf course you do, MyEden.â Rose felt her heart split in two. The world wasnât a big enough place for Eden to run, but Rose couldnât tell her that. It was a lesson sheâd have to learn on her own. âWhere will you go?â
Eden shrugged again and took a deep breath before responding. âSomeplace warm,â she quipped, forcing a smile. âSomeplace where there are no subways, air pollution, or weird-looking creatures that only I can see.â
Rose smiled, too. âI hope you find that place. And I hope that itâs all that you dream it should be.â
Rose said it but she didnât believe it. There was no place like that in this
