objected.
âI donât think heâll have to,â Sephrenia replied. She looked speculatively at Xanetia. âDo we trust each other enough to co-operate, Anarae?â she asked. âIâm talking about something a little deeper than weâve gone so far.â
âI will listen most attentively to thy proposal, my sister.â
âDelphaeic magic is directed primarily inward, isnât it?â
Xanetia nodded.
âThatâs probably why no one can hear or feel it. Styric magic is just the reverse. We alter things around us, so our magic reaches out. Neither form will work by itself in this particular situation, but if we were to combinethem â¦â She left it hanging in the air between them.
âInteresting notion,â Aphrael mused.
âIâm not sure I follow,â Vanion said.
âThe Anarae and I are going to have to experiment a bit,â Sephrenia told him, âbut if what Iâve got in mind works, weâll be able to make Berit look so much like Sparhawk that theyâll be able to use each other for shaving mirrors.â
âAs long as each of us knows exactly what the otherâs doing, itâs not too difficult, Sparhawk,â Sephrenia assured him later when he and Berit joined her, Vanion and the Anarae in the room she shared with Vanion.
âWill it really work?â he asked her dubiously.
âThey havenât actually tried it yet, Sparhawk,â Vanion told him, âso weâre not entirely positive.â
âThat doesnât sound too promising. This isnât much of a face, but itâs the only one Iâve got.â
âThere will be no danger to thee or to young Sir Berit, Anakha,â Xanetia said. âIn times past it hath oft been necessary for my people to leave our valley and to go abroad amongst others. This hath been our means of disguising our true identity.â
âIt works sort of like this, Sparhawk,â Sephrenia explained. âXanetia casts a Delphaeic spell that would normally imprint your features on her own face, but just as she releases
her
spell,
I
release a Styric one that deflects the spell to Berit instead.â
âWonât every Styric in Matherion feel it when you release your spell?â Sparhawk asked.
âThatâs the beauty of it, Sparhawk,â Aphrael told him. âThe spell itself originates with Xanetia, and others canât feel or hear a Delphaeic spell. Cyrgon himself could be in the next room and he wouldnât hear a thing.â
âYouâre sure itâs going to work?â
âThereâs one way to find out.â
Sparhawk, of course, did not feel a thing. He
was
only the model, after all. It was a bit disconcerting to watch Beritâs appearance gradually change, however.
When the combined spell had been completed, sparhawk carefully inspected his young friend. âDo I really look like that from the side?â he asked Vanion, feeling a bit deflated.
âI canât tell the two of you apart.â
âThat nose is really crooked, isnât it?â
âWe thought you knew.â
âIâve never looked at myself from the side this way before.â Sparhawk looked critically at Beritâs eyes. âYou should probably try to squint just a little,â he suggested. âMy eyes arenât as good as they used to be. âThatâs one of the things you have to look forward to as you get older.â
âIâll try to remember that.â Even Beritâs voice was different.
âDo I really sound like that?â Sparhawk was crestfallen.
Vanion nodded.
Sparhawk shook his head. âSeeing and hearing yourself as others do definitely lowers your opinion of yourself,â he admitted. He looked at Berit again. âI didnât feel anything, did you?â
Berit nodded, swallowing hard.
âWhat was it like?â
âIâd really rather not talk about
