spot, and if Paradise was anything like Portal, heâd certainly chosen well.
âYou coming?â The door of the trailer hung open as Nate waited on the landing.
âIâm coming,â she called back, and got out.
Â
Nate hadnât told Rachel that only one bedroom was furnished. There werenât many rental options in Portal; heâd had to take what he could find. Heâd figured he could always sleep on the couch. But as he studied the short, lumpy sofa in what passed for a living room, he decided heâd rather lie awake night after night suffering from sexual frustration at Rachelâs side.
She stood in the hallway, gazing into one bedroom and then the second, which was empty. Eventually, she turned to glare at him.
âWhat?â He spread his hands in mock innocence.
âYou know what.â
âDonât worry. Iâll let you bunk with me, at least until we can get a mattress for the other room.â
âYouâre going to let me sleep with you.â
He wondered if she was remembering the last time sheâd been in his bed. âJust until we can get you a mattress. That wonât be any problem, will it?â
âWhat do you think?â
âI know youâre on a sexual hiatus and all, but you said yourself that Iâm no temptation. And even if we get a little hot and bothered, whatâs one more hurrah after entertaining all those beach bums?â He chuckled at her stricken expression as he went out to collect the rest of their supplies. But heâd underestimated her resistance. When he returned, he met her going in the opposite direction, carrying the cheap secondhand suitcase theyâd bought for her in Phoenix.
âIâm finding my own place to stay,â she announced. âConsider us estranged and on the brink of divorce.â
He put down the groceries in his arms and moved to cut her off. She had the keys. âThereâs no need to over-react,â he said, sobering in an effort to calm her. âWe canât be estranged when we approach the Covenanters. And thereâs nothing else around here. Do you think I wouldâve picked this place if Iâd had any other choice?â
âI think you feel itâs a big joke that Iâm going to be without any personal spaceâbut Iâm not laughing.â
âItâs not a joke. IâIâll sleep on the floor, okay? Itâs a job, Rachel, like any other. You canât tell me you havenât been in compromising situations before. What makes this one any different?â
That wasnât hard to answer. He knew working with him was what made it different. But he also knew sheâd never admit it.
âI just donât understand why I couldnât have handled this alone,â she said. âI work better that way.â
âSo youâve said. But sometimes you have to adjust.â
âThat doesnât include sleeping with my manager!â
He couldâve mentioned that it was a little late to worry about that. After all, she was the one whoâd let herself into his condo, removed her clothing and offered him everything she had, including her heart. But he knew the reminder wouldnât help. It was the fact that theyâd been together before that was causing all the trouble now. âHey, this isnât about us,â he said. âOur work never is. Itâs about doing what we have to. Period. You know that.â
She remained stiff, resistant, so he tried another tack.âLook, I didnât set you up, okay? Youâve seen whatâs available in Portal. This place was all I could get, unless youâd rather camp out under the stars. I figured weâd make improvements when we couldâand we will. Until then, Iâll sleep in a bag in the spare room. Nothingâs changed. Thereâs no problem.â
Her forehead rumpled as she kicked at the dirt, but it wasnât long before
