just left Dale and Bess. Heâs still upset about his beer. I told him I would have done the same thing.â
Tristan leaned against the counter. âItâs hard to look at the man he is now and remember the man he was.â
âYeah, but we get to walk away and take a break. Bess canât.â
âSheâd fight anyone who tried to make her.â Tristan almost smiled. âSome women stick.â
âI got lucky and blessed,â Zachary said. âMadison and the kids are my life.â
âDonât I know it. I might have to wait until Manda grows up to find me a good woman,â Tristan teased, referring to Zachâs five-year-old daughter.
âDonât even jest,â Zachary said, a shudder in his voice. âSheâs growing up much too fast and so is Zachary Jr. Itâs hard to believe heâll be two in a couple of months.â
âHeâll be going out on jobs with you before you know it, just like Manda,â Tristan said.
Zachary chuckled. âI thought sheâd be more interested in TV broadcasting like her mother, but whenever I fix something around the house, sheâs right there with me. Which reminds me, Bess said Daleâs dialysis is scheduled for Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Iâll go over since the crews will be busy at your site and two others.â
âThanks. Iâll payââ
âIf you want to stay my friend, youâll forget about money where Dale is concerned,â Zachary said. âI just wish I had known his situation before now.â
âHe didnât want you to know that he was having such a hard time. That heâs messed up,â Tristan told him. âPride got in the way.â
âMy daddy always said a man who said he hadnât made a mistake was a liar.â
âYour daddy is a smart man.â Tristan sighed. âIâve made my share.â
âSame here,â Zachary said. âThankfully weâve learned from them.â
Tristan caught a hint of something in Zacharyâs voice. âI think youâve moved from generality.â
âYou were always smartâat least in some things,â Zachary said. âBess likes the social worker, and was a bit concerned that she might be next on your hit list.â
Tristan squirmed. âIâm not that bad.â
âIf Manda was of age to be dating men your age, I wouldnât let you within ten miles of her,â Zachary said.
âBess doesnât have to worry. Kara turned me down flat,â Tristan said, his irritation rising all over again. He really wasnât that bad. âShe said she wasnât interested.â
âIt sounds as if it wasnât the answer you expected,â Zachary said.
âIt wasnât.â
âNo never stopped you in the past,â Zachary said. âI donât think it will this time either.â
âYouâre right, but thereâs another reason. Sheâs a fantastic artist. Her work deserves to be seen.â
âIf only that was all you planned to see.â
Tristan burst out laughing. âBye, Zachary. Kiss that beautiful wife and the kids for me.â
âI will. The crew should be there at eight to start tearing out. You still plan to be there every day?â
âYes,â Tristan answered, looking around the kitchen. âUnlike the first job, when I let your crew do all the work, I want to show that the homeowner with no experience can do a lot of the remodeling and save money.â
Zachary grunted. âThereâs nothing like experience, but Iâll let you find out for yourself.â
âWith the cameras rolling and a photographer here, the entire world is going to find out. Bye.â
âBye.â
Tristan closed the phone, finished measuring, and then walked through the house once again, seeing in his mindâs eye the changes that would make the house come alive with warmth and
