would be fish food.â
There wasnât any point arguing, especially as Saffy was right. He hated it when Saffy was right.
Felix walked into the room. âHas she called yet?â he asked chirpily, heading over to the fridge for a chocolate bar.
Jasper moaned and shook his head.
âShe will. Sheâs just making you sweat it out a bit.â Mac sucked on a lollipop thoughtfully. âI wonder what your punishment will be.â
âBut I got the monster, didnât I?â Jasper said weakly.
âYeah, but you also went into known monster territory without your hunt belt on. Even Saffy took hers, and she was escaping!â Mac said.
âOK, OK, I get it,â Jasper groaned. He got the feeling Mac was enjoying this.
âThereâs no chocolate left!â Felix complained from behind the fridge door.
Saffy shook her head. âDonât even think about it,â she said, just as Felix made a lunge for her chocolate bar.
Mac leant over and looked closely at Jasper. âSeriously, though, it was good work to let yourself be guided. You kept control of the whispering beautifully,â he said quietly.
Jasper froze. âHow do you â¦?â
Mac glanced up at the others. Saffy and Felix were still fighting over the last chocolate bar and werenât taking any notice. âItâs a bit freaky at first, but once you get your head around it, itâs actually pretty cool. Itâs like having an internal monster compass. You just have to show it whoâs boss.â
Jasper was stunned. Mac! A Whispered?
âYou can kiss my ...â Saffy squirmed out of Felixâs reach, then shoved the last bit of chocolate into her mouth. âWhich reminds me,â Saffy turned to Jasper. âWhich foot do you want to kiss first?â
Felix burst out laughing.
âYou said that if I escaped, you would kiss my feet,â she reminded Jasper sweetly.
âNo way! It doesnât count! You came back!â
Jasper said indignantly.
Saffy stood up and started towards him.
âThatâs only because I had to rescue you,â she smiled smugly. âI couldâve been long gone.â
Jasper turned to Mac for support, but he just laughed.
âShe does have a point,â said Mac. âPlus sheâs got a cool idea for getting rid of the Scramblers in the lake. You better find your earplugs and nosepegs.â He wandered out of the room.
Jasper was really looking forward to enjoying a nice relaxing swim in that lake. He hoped the plan was a quick one. Or one that consisted of Jasper lolling on the water while everyone else caught the monsters.
Saffy flicked Jasper with her towel. âCome on, whereâs your hunt belt?â
âWerenât you planning to escape more permanently?â asked Jasper.
âWhat, and let you lot try to handle things?â
Saffy snorted. âI donât think so!â
Felix rolled his eyes. âAnd I thought weâd finally got rid of her.â
The phone began to ring. Felix and Saffy looked at Jasper.
âSaved by the bell. Enjoy,â Saffy whispered, but she looked quite sympathetic.
Felix patted him on the back. âTough one, mate,â he said quietly.
Jasper plucked up his courage, and picked up the phone. âH-h-hello?â he said, trying not to sound nervous.
âGot ya,â said Mac on the other end. He was calling from the other room.
âMac!â groaned Jasper. âSheâs going to ring any minute!â
âNo, she wonât. I didnât say a word,â he said.
Jasper couldnât believe it. âBut â I thought you had to report everything ?â
âI was just winding you up,â said Mac. âWhat happens on a Hunt, stays on a Hunt.â
Jasper smiled and hung up the phone. Mac popped his head around the door. âI wouldnât look too relieved,â he warned. âYou havenât heard Saffyâs plan
