spending time with her.
âYou want to hang out with me instead?â Derrick asked. âWe can go to the movies.â
âThatâs okay,â I said. âThereâs nothing I wanna see. Why donât we get something to eat, then practice for All-City? We can be as loud as we want since Mama and Daddy arenât here.â
âOkay,â Derrick agreed.
We decided to order pizza, and by the time it arrived we had already been working for almost an hour. I peeled a hundred off the wad DC had given me the night before and waited while the delivery guy gave me change.
Derrick and I settled down to eat. As he chewed thoughtfully on his third slice of ham and pineapple pizza, he looked at me.
âWhat?â I said, reaching for a napkin to wipe the cheesy goo off my face.
âYou really gonâ go back and work for DC?â
I frowned at him. âYeah,â I said. âWhat part of âfifteen hundred dollarsâ didnât you understand?â
Derrick just shook his head.
âWhat?â I asked, really getting annoyed.
âI canât believe you.â
I rolled my eyes. âLike you wouldnât take the money if it was offered to you. Youâre just jealous that you werenât given the chance to make it.â
As soon as the words came out of my mouth, I regretted saying them. âIâm sorry,â I said quickly.
Derrick just looked at me and gave this dry laugh. âYou really think Iâm jealous of you?â he asked.
I didnât respond, although I was thinking, Who wouldnât be jealous?
âGirl, youâre going to learn that money isnât everything. Youâve heard the horror stories about DC just like I have. Donât sell your soul just to make a quick dollar,â he said, sounding like Daddy.
âWhatever,â I said. I headed to my room and decided to call Loretta.
âHow was your job interview?â I asked.
âI got it!â she said, and I hadnât heard her sound so excited in a long time.
âCongratulations,â I said. âYou never did tell me what the position is for.â
âOh, thatâs the great part,â she said. âIâm going to be working for Hot .â
âYou mean that magazine with the half-naked women on the cover?â
âYeah,â she said excitedly. âIâm going to be a photo assistant, so Iâll get to go to the shoots and everything. This should be great for my modeling career.â
I wondered about Lorettaâs sudden fascination with being half-naked, but before I could say anything else, she started talking again.
âI found out Madd Dogg is casting for his video next week. Do you think you could loan me five hundred dollars so that I can get my new pictures done? I promise Iâll pay you back.â
âSure,â I said without hesitation. What good was earning extra money if I couldnât help my friends?
âCool. Iâll come get it tomorrow.â
âOkay,â I agreed. âWell, I guess Iâll chill for a little while before bed. See you tomorrow.â
âBye,â she said, and we hung up.
DCâs assistant, Jessica, called me first thing Monday morning. I didnât even hear the phone ring. It wasnât until Derrick came and tossed the cordless onto my chest that I jumped up, trying to figure out what was going on.
âJasmine, I just wanted to give you the information for the new venue,â Jessica said.
âOkay,â I said, knowing I sounded like I was still asleep. I cleared my throat as I grabbed my notebook and a pen from my nightstand. âIâm ready.â
âItâs Club Horizon on Merrick Boulevard in Laurelton.â
âOh, yeah, I know where that is. Itâs not too far from my momâs job. It just opened, right?â
âYes,â Jessica said. âI think youâre really going to like the place.â
âI hope
