to be the word from your language, though it’s hard to know for sure right now.” I ran a hand through my mane, my head beginning to ache from the effort of speaking. “My power is as a machinist. I can fix things—get parts to work when they shouldn’t any longer.”
She paced the length of her car, staying far away from me. “Where are you from?”
    “Planet Xouthhgros originally.”
    “So you’re…an alien?”
I was too tired to control my words. “Non-earthling, yes.”
She fell back, retreating farther from me and inching closer to her vehicle as her voice began to shake. “What is this? Some kind of joke? Aliens aren’t real. Are you here to make me fall for you and then lie like this?”
“No. This is me.” My words were low and deep, holding a promise I didn’t know if she would understand. “I don’t know your joe-cke , but I’m definitely real. I’m Cutthlaise, Reithhar Warrior of the planet Xouthhgros and Master Machinist for the former BHG489-2140 Colony. My planet was destroyed many seasons ago, so I moved to a colony on the planet BHG489 with the few of us who were left. I was on a hunting trip when that colony was also destroyed. Those of us who survived have been looking for a place to reside ever since.”
Words were hard with my body so depleted. I fell back against the car, catching myself on the edge before I crashed to the ground. Holding myself up with one hand. Klow-ee didn’t seem to notice, though.
“You’re an alien.” She nodded, pacing once more, making my head spin with the back-and-forth. “Of course, you’re an alien. Why would I think a mail order bride dating agency would set me up with a normal gg-iee ?”
Before I could find the energy to speak, Klow-ee spun to face me. Her eyes stretched wide, and her face flushed.
“Does the agency know about this? About…you?”
I bobbed my head, the weight of it pulling me forward. “Of course. They service beings from all over the galaxies to help us find compatible mates.”
If her reaction was any indication, that wasn’t the answer she wanted to hear. “Mates. What the fuck do you mean, mates ?”
“My kind searches with our esehhnces to find the one being who can make us happy. True partners to share a life with.” Just speaking of mates and knowing how much I hoped to bond with her that way gave me a jolt of need. I crept closer, unable to resist even as she retreated a step.
    “Cutlass—”
“Klow-ee, please,” I said, pulling on every bit of strength I had. Wanting so badly to calm her in any way I could. Needing to. “I am still me. Still the man who took you to eat out and kiss-sed your sweet lips. The man who stayed up all night to learn everything I could about you. The man who pleasured you with my tongue and cock.”
“I know what we did, but…” The anger fell from her face, leaving behind a look that broke something inside of me. An expression of loss. “But you’re not human.”
Her whispered confession burned, fueling a deep pain inside of me. A fissure of my very esehhnce.
“No, I’m not,” I said, trying hard to keep her talking to me. “But I can pretend to be for others. When it’s needed, I can act human. Not with you, though. I can’t be dishonest with you, my Klow-ee. I don’t want to be.”
“Dishonest? This is more than just dishonest. It’s not as if you lied on—” Her face paled, and she took a step back, fumbling for the vehicle door. “I can’t do this. I can’t… I have to go.”
If there was a human word for the level of pain I felt at her rejection, I didn’t know it. But the unending ache was there, deep inside me and throbbing. It was real and all because she was leaving.
“Klow-ee, wait.” I reached as if to grab her, my fingers barely brushing her arm as I stumbled slightly on heavy legs, but she recoiled violently.
“No.” She shook her head and climbed back into her vehicle, slamming the door and creating a barrier between us. A wall
