âAnd thatâs how you treat a wisp of a lass who is only trying to defend herself?â
âI didnât realize she was a womanâshe was dressed in that ridiculous outfit and her face was completely hidden by her helmet. And besides,â he finished, âshe attacked me first.â
âGood gracious, Melantha, were you trying to kill this nice young man?â asked Beatrice, appalled.
âWe were robbing them,â explained Melantha, âand he had managed to avoid the nets.â
âHeâs a slippery one, all right,â agreed Magnus. He winked at Roarke.
âBut why have you brought them here?â wondered Hagar. âYou never bring prisoners home with you.â
âUnfortunately, we learned that these men have been sent by MacTier to crush the Falcon and âhisâ band,â explained Colin. âAs they intended to kill us, that made releasing them somewhat problematic.â
âThen itâs a bloody, agonizing death to the lot of them!â concluded Thor, ecstatic. âStand still, you MacTier wretch!â He grunted with effort as he hoisted his sword and took a faltering step toward Roarke.
âHere, now, thereâll be no killing without my consent, Thor,â said Laird MacKillon, frowning at the elder. âCease your nonsense and letâs hear what Melantha has to say about this ransom business.â
Thor huffed with irritation and lowered his weapon.
âAs I see it,â began Melantha, âwe gain far more by ransoming these warriors than we would by killing themââ
âI donât know why you would think that.â Thor eyed Eric speculatively. âA big chap like that would make a lot of bread.â
âI propose that we use them to regain some of what MacTier has stolen from us,â she continued, âand show him we are a force to be reckoned with at the same time.â
âBut weâre not a force to be reckoned with,â objected Laird MacKillon. âMacTier already knows that well enough.â
âPerhaps we havenât the strength to face MacTier in battle,â allowed Melantha, âbut it is clear that the Falconâs band has troubled him enough these past few months to make him feel our sting. That is why he sent these warriors to capture us.â
âBut he doesnât know the Falcon is from this clan,â pointed out Hagar. âIf we ransom these nasty-looking fellows, heâll have to know that it is we MacKillons who have captured them.â
âAnd heâll be terribly angry with us,â added Beatrice worriedly. âIâm afraid I cannot see how that will benefit us at all.â
âIt will benefit us to regain that which he has stolen from us,â explained Melantha. âWe will exchange these warriors for food, livestock, clothing, weapons, and goldâall things that were taken from us by the MacTiers when they attacked us last autumn.â
Hagar regarded her doubtfully. âWhat if MacTier agrees to pay us this ransom, and once he has these warriors he turns around and attacks us with his army?â
âThe gold must be paid in advance of the release of these prisoners,â Melantha explained. âWe will use it to buy the alliance of the MacKenzies and the protection of their army.â
âNot even MacTier will dare attack us again if he knows that we have such a powerful force ready to come to our aid,â said Colin.
Laird MacKillon looked intrigued by the possibility. âAn army, you say?â
Hagar stroked his chin. âThat would come to our aid whenever we need it?â
Magnus smiled fondly at Melantha. âThe lass is just like her fatherâalways thinking.â
âDoes this mean I donât get to kill these chaps?â grumbled Thor.
âIf we ask enough for these warriors, and we secure an alliance with the MacKenzies, then we need never worry about being vulnerable to
