each rim?â
âOf course,â Jamal said.
âHow far is it from the basket?â Kia asked.
âFour feet. Enough of the easy stuff. How
wide
are the hash marks on the court?â
This was the first question I hadnât known the answer to. I looked at Kia. Her expression was as solid as stone.
âTwo inches,â she said.
I looked at Jamal. He nodded.
They went back and forth, asking and answering each otherâs questions. It was starting to look like they both knew
all
the rules. I had to admit that I was starting to gain respect for both of them. I wondered if they were feeling the same thing?
âAre free throws awarded on double personal fouls?â Kia asked.
âNope,â Jamal said. âDo double persons count against team fouls?â
Kia didnât answer right away. âUmmmâ¦no,â she said, but she didnât sound very confident.
Jamal reluctantly nodded.
Kia breathed a sigh of relief. âOkay, letâs stick with fouls. How many team fouls are allowed perperiod before a non-shooting foul becomes a free-throw?â
âFour allowed. Fifth is where the team gets to takeââ
âFive minutes until we start to play!â Jerome yelled out. âFive minutes!â
The way these two were going weâd still be sitting here in five minutes, listening to them ask questions.
âI think Jamal has proven he knows the rulesâas well as you know themâso I say letâs make him captain and you can be the
assistant
captain,â I suggested.
Neither answered.
âCome on, we donât have time for this to go on. All those in favor of Jamal becoming the captain raise your hands.â
My hand went up, as did Jamalâs and then another playerâs and another and another, until everybody except Kiaâs hand was raised.
âMight as well make it unanimous,â Kia said and raised her hand as well.
âNow we need a team name,â I said.
âMy favorite team is the Pistons,â Troy suggested. âHow about the Pistons?â
âI like the Spurs,â another guy said, âand theyâre a better team than the Pistons.â
âWe ainât no NBA team,â Jamal said. âHow about if we just think of our own nameâ¦something that is us and not somebody else.â
âYou got any suggestions?â
He smiled. âI was thinking the Zebras.â
âZebras?â a few people questioned.
He nodded his head. âBlack,â he said, gesturing to himself and the other four teammates who were black. âAnd white,â he said, pointing at Kia and then me.
âBut thatâs stupid. We could be the Pianos or the Penguins if thatâs what counts,â Kia said.
âNow those names would just be plain stupid,â Jamal said.
âAnd Zebras isnât?â she asked.
âZebras are at least fast and powerful,â another kid said.
âAnd the basic food group of lions and leopards,â Kia countered. âDo we really want to be named after an animal that other animals eat?â
âThey can only eat them if they catch them,â I said. âIf zebras run fast enough, maybe they can avoid being anybodyâs meal. Maybe thatâs what we have to do. If we run and gun, we can win.â
âSo are we the Zebras?â Jamal asked.
âWhy not?â Brandon said. âI like it.â
âItâs better than the Pianos,â I said.
âWhose side are you on?â Kia asked.
âIâm on the same side as everybody,â I replied. âWeâre all on the
same
side, the
same
teamâ¦the Zebras.â
âTwo minutes until we get started!â Jerome yelled.
âLetâs just go with the nameâ¦the name doesnât matter, anyway. We better just go with that name,â Kia said. âLetâs talk about who plays what position.â
âIâm tall,â Brandon said, âso I
