    Prologue
    The earth was damp beneath their bodies; she could feel his legs tremble under her .  His wound was severe, and she was the cause.  She could see the people walking by on the foot path above where she lay with him, her hand clamped tightly over his mouth.  He squirmed beneath her, his eyes as big as saucers staring up at her.  It was a shame really, because he had brought it all on himself.  She had been forced to make a decision and she had chosen.  She thought she felt what humans termed pain or sadness in the center of her chest as she watched the life leaving his body.  She knew she only had a second of time to share her own blood with him before it was too late ; otherwise he would be gone forever.
