scream
in anger. “But the venom is out now, correct? He’s
okay?”
“To the best of our ability. Ms. Brooks, this was an illegal
modification and there are few studies done on the side effects of
being dosed with such a high dose of venom. His physical properties
have subdued but our detectors can still sense magic flowing through
him.” The woman guided Alexa to the window, the two of them
peering in at Seth’s deceptively peaceful face. “I think
it might be wise for the two of you to stay in the area for a while.
Just in case something unforeseen occurs.”
“Are you saying he’ll… He’ll be changed
by this?” Alexa asked, closing her eyes for a moment. Seth
didn’t look particularly different than when they had started
the weekend. Maybe a little stronger, a little taller. But she could
just be seeing things.
“There is no way to predict,” Dr. Madel said evenly.
“It may be nothing. It could just be an echo of the magic once
moving in his veins.”
Alexa nodded. They had a good hospital where they lived and she
didn’t want to stay here any longer than she had to. She wanted
to go home and try and think of how the fuck she’d ever be able
to face her friend again.
“I’ll ask him when he wakes up,” she finally
said, leaning heavily on the glass. The idea of talking to Seth was
unsettling as fuck. Maybe it would just be better to pretend nothing
had happened until they were home. She could do that. She had spent
the last couple of months doing exactly that and was pretty damn sure
she could hold out another few days.

    Alexa silently pushed Seth’s
wheelchair out the hospital doors and towards the large parking lot.
The hotel had kindly driven their car down along with their personal
belongings and Alexa could not be more grateful for their
consideration. Not having to return to the spa and then drive another
four hours home on top of the exhaustion she was feeling was about
the only blessing she was getting out of this trip.
“Lexa?” Seth tilted his head up, looking back at her.
“I'd rather walk.”
Pursing her lips, Alexa stopped the wheelchair before the steep
curb of the parking lot, locking the legs in place. Seth stood, his
bandaged leg not even wobbling as he supported his weight on his own
feet. She led the way to the car, not daring to look back at him as
he followed at a slower pace. She could feel the weight of his stare
boring into her but thankfully his eyes were at least no longer
glowing.
Alexa had started with her plan of not talking about what had
happened and was definitely finding it easier than acknowledging the
thoughts and emotions she was stubbornly pushing aside. She wouldn’t
even know what to say. Sighing, she unzipped her purse, seeking out
her keys while Seth continued to hover behind her.
    “Lexa.”
Alexa jumped when his hand brushed her arm, her eyes glancing his
way a moment before quickly looking back to her purse. Where the fuck
were her keys!
“Lexa, talk to me. Please,” Seth whispered, tugging on
her arm. “I can’t lose you. I don’t know what I’d
fucking do if I lost you over this.”
He tugged again, Alexa slowly turning with a huff. She glared at
his chest, refusing to answer.
“I don’t know how to fix this. A part of me can’t
even understand why it’s a problem.”
Her eyes snapping to his, she looked at Seth in disbelief. “Are
you fucking kidding me?”
“No,” Seth said, meeting her angry glare head on.
“Every fucking magical sense I had said you wanted me, Lexa. I
kept smelling your sex.” Seth combed his hair back roughly,
sighing. “Maybe it was lying to me—Fuck, I can still
smell it.” He turned away, pacing haltingly.
She stared at his back, worry twisting in her stomach as she took
in his wide, strong shoulders. Seth seemed taller than before, maybe
even a little more bulked. Dismissing it, she returned to her search,
cursing her oversized purse she insisted on using.
    “What are you wearing?” Seth
