describe it?â Katie asked, trying not to cringe as she lifted her gaze to meet Saraâs.
âWell...â Sara answered with a smile. âHe said it was âpretty crazy,â and Josh has seen plenty of crazy, so thatâs a big deal for him. I donât think any of the guys saw it coming.â
âJoin the club,â Katie said. âThey probably think Iâm a slut.â
All three of her friends laughed. âYou are the least slutty woman in Crimson,â Millie told her.
âOnly on the outside.â Sometimes Katie hated her sainted reputation. The pressure to live up to what people thought about her could be enough to drive her crazy. âIf you knew what I was thinking and feeling on the inside...â
Natalie wiggled her eyebrows. âWhich is?â
âThat Iâd like to get Noah into the bedroom.â She reached for a brownie and added, âAgain.â
âAgain?â three voices chorused.
Katie ignored the heat rising in her cheeks, both from revealing the secret to her friends and from the memory of Noahâs hands all over her body. âWe didnât plan it the first time, and I know it was a mistake based on his reaction.â
âLet me guess.â Natalie pushed back in her chair. âHe freaked out.â
âTook off into the woods for several days,â Katie said with a nod. âHe couldnât handle it.â
âI donât know him well,â Sara said, âbut it doesnât seem like Noah does long-term relationships.â
âNoahâs idea of long term is a second date,â Natalie confirmed.
Millie placed a gentle hand on Katieâs wrist. âAnd youâre ready to settle down with the right guy. Thatâs the whole reason for Project Set Up Katie.â
âIâm a project? Thatâs depressing.â
âNot if it gets you the future you want,â Sara argued.
âUnless what you want has changed,â Natalie suggested. âBecause I thought you were moving on from how you feel about Noah. You know heâs not the type of guy to settle down. You want hot sex, I bet he can serve that up on a silver platter. Nothing more, Katie.â
âI get it,â she agreed then paused. âBut if you saw how he looked at the hospital, how alone he was... He needs more in his life than a string of one-night stands. He needs...â
âYou?â Sara asked.
Before she could answer, Natalie sat forward. âNo. He needs to grow up and take responsibility for his own stuff. Youâve been available to him for years, and he suddenly realizes youâre there just when his mom is sick and heâs back in Crimson for the summer. Too much of a coincidence for my taste.â
âBut if she cares about him, maybe this is the opportunity theyâve needed.â Millie absently brushed the brownie crumbs into her palm. âMaybe sheâs what Noah needs.â
âOf course she is,â Natalie agreed. âAny guy would be lucky to have our Katie. But he doesnât deserve her.â
âStop talking like Iâm not here.â Katie stood abruptly and grabbed the empty brownie plate. âI know all about Noah. I know heâs not a long-term bet, but I do care about him. I canât turn that off. It doesnât matter anyway. He has me on such a pedestal, he couldnât handle something real between us.â
âDoes that mean more kissing and stuff?â Sara asked with a wink.
âOr does it mean no more dates with other men?â Millie asked. âBecause Olivia had high hopes for Matt Davis.â
âMatt is a great guy.â Katie walked behind the counter and set the plate in the sink. âI told him Iâd go out with him again.â
âAnd Noah?â
She shook her head. âNo more kissing and stuff. Youâre right. I want something more. Something Noah is unwilling and unable to give
