was fine. She told the boys that Jason will go with you next time and Mason will stay with me.â
âFine, Iâm just glad itâs not today,â I said. âIâll be under the stage cleaning. And Iâll hear everyone getting their parts.â
The roles were being announced for The Wizard of Oz . I, of course, would be happy for everyone. Just sad for me. The first big play and I didnât even get to try out.
I sighed as I shoved my âschool clothesâ into my locker. Today I was going to clean behind the shelvesâa particularly dirty job. So, into my locker went my Summer Slave light blue tank and my purchased-by-Emma-when-she-was-pretending-to-be-me-at-the-mall gray cardigan. I was now wearing an oversized green T-shirt from my summer camp over my jeans. I pulled my hair up into a ponytail.
âNo comment on my clothes,â I said to Emma. âNobodyâs going to see me under the stage.â
â Iâm not the twin who comments on fashion choices,â Emma said.
âI have a serious mess to clean up today,â I continued grumbling. âAnd Iâm exhausted. You werenât the only one who didnât get sleep last night with you having nightmares and shouting âGeckos!ââ
âGeckos! Geckos!â someone yelled.
Emma and I both looked at each other.
âThat was weird,â Emma said.
âOh, no,â I said. âThereâs my gecko nightmare.â
Sydney was walking our way, followed by Cashmere. Sydney was in her green-and-yellow cheerleading outfit.
âGo, Geckos!â she shouted, and kicked a cheer jump.
I quickly got my backpack, hoping I could escape before Sydney passed us.
âEw, itâs the twins,â I heard. Suddenly a green pom-pom landed at my feet.
Too late.
âOoopsie!â Sydney said. âDropped my pom.â
âIgnore,â Emma said under her breath.
I couldnât help it. I gave the pom-pom a flying kick.
âPayton, you better hurry up or youâre going to be late for Drama,â Sydney said, scooping up her pom-pom. âWeâre finding out the cast today! Oh, wait, you couldnât try out.â
Cashmere laughed. Erg.
âHey, Cashmere,â Emma suddenly called out. âHow come you didnât try out for Drama? Sydney tell you not to because sheâs afraid of competition?â
I had to give Emma credit. She was not backing down from Sydney. Unlike me, who was practically hiding in my locker.
âNo,â Cashmere said. âSydney told me not to becauseâwait, why couldnât I try out, Syd?â
âOh, puh-lease, like youâd be competition,â Sydney said. âI mean, because youâre so busy with your other . . . activities.â
âOh, what are you involved in, Cashmere?â Emma asked.
âWell, we go to the mall Wednesdays and Fridays and . . .um . . .,â Cashmere said, looking suspiciously at Sydney.
âWhatever,â Sydney said. âWhat are you wearing, Payton? I thought you were supposed to be the fashionable twin. Oh, thatâs right. You have to clean the basement.â
âOh, look, I have a text!â Emma said, cutting her off.
âItâs probably Ox,â I said.
Sydneyâs eyes narrowed. Zing!
âCome on, Cash,â Sydney said. âLetâs go find out what part I have in the play.â
They trotted off down the hall. Ergh.
âSo who was the text really from?â I asked Emma.
âThere was no text, genius. I was saving you. And then you had to go say that about Ox? I canât believe you said it might be Ox,â Emma said, and then groaned. âSo embarrassing. And what if Sydney says something to him?â
I knew Emma felt like she was on shaky ground with Ox.
âSorry,â I said. âI choked. But it got rid of Sydney, didnât it? It was the only thing I could think of to bother her.â
