Kimya snapped. Then she groaned, remembering Blackmane with sadness.
âWell, I didnât kill both of them,â Challenger leered. âWhat of the survivor?â
âHeâs fully recovered,â Kimya retorted. âYou neednât sound so smug. Heâll be ready when you come calling again.â
âHow do you know I will?â Challenger asked, amused.
Kimya realised she had almost given herself away and was annoyed. She tried to recover ground. âAre you so easily put off?â
âOh, no. Howâs your sister? Still as close as ever, the pair of you?â
Kimya blinked. The young upstart seemed to know all about her situation. Or was he guessing? âCloser,â she fibbed. Now she saw the scars on his body and astonished herself by feeling a rush of sympathy. âHow are your wounds? Still smarting?â
âOf course theyâre still smarting,â he admitted honestly, âI nearly died.â
Kimya softened. âIâm ⦠glad you didnât,â she heard herself saying. âOne death was enough.â She began to move away, aware that she had probably given the young lion encouragement without meaning to.
âWait!â Challenger called, trying to think of something that might detain her. He came closer. âDid your cub return?â
Kimya was puzzled âMy cub?â Then she thought of Moja. âYou meanââ she began, then interrupted herself. âHow do you know about him?â she demanded.
Challenger started to explain. Kimya was too impatient to listen. âYouâve seen him!â she exclaimed. âThen heâs alive?â
âAs far as I know,â Challenger replied, and went on to describe how they had spent time together, omitting his own part in preventing Mojaâs return. âI lost touch with him. Iâm surprised he hasnât found you by now.â
Kimya suspected there was more to the story than she had been told. But all she could think of just then was to bring the glad news to Huru. âThank you for this,â she said. âI know someone whoâll be even more thrilled than I am to hear it.â And she raced on her way without a secondâs hesitation.
Battlescars was hungry. Huru had moved the cubs to a place of concealment while she watched a group of zebra. She needed to make a kill. The male lion shadowed her reluctantly, waiting only for Kimyaâs reappearance as an excuse to absent himself. Huru had no reason to trust Battlescars as a hunter â he had no flair for it â so she too looked forward to Kimyaâsreturn. She would have been even more impatient had she guessed at the news her sister would bring.
âSister!â Kimya bounded up, panting and frolicking in her high spirits. âHeâs alive! Our cubâs alive!â
Huru forgot all about hunting. âDo you mean ⦠can you mean â¦â She was trembling.
âI mean Moja! Yes! Heâs alive and somewhere not far away. Iâve been speaking toâ â her voice dropped to a whisper as Battlescars showed signs of interest â âthe brave young lion.â
Huru didnât question Kimyaâs motives in conversing with Blackmaneâs killer. She was desperate to hear more about Moja. âTell me all about it later,â she said in a low voice as Battlescars joined them.
âIs it Moja youâre talking about? Where is he? How do you know heâs still alive?â the old male demanded eagerly.
Kimya gave him the chief facts. âI donât know where he is,â she finished. âBut heâs feeding himself and surviving. He must come back soon. Oh, wonât the other cubs be delighted?â
âFood first,â Battlescars decreed. âThey need to eat. We all need to eat. Than weâll decide what to do about Moja.â
An hour later the pride slumbered, undisturbed by the noise of jackals and vultures
