too.â
Magnolia took it from Joshâs hand. It was a photocopy of a page of a book. In the top right-hand corner was written in small type: Oakview Public School Official Rule Book . Magnolia skimmed down the page to the lines highlighted in yellow and read aloud.
âRule number one hundred and thirteen-b: All school clubs shall be open to all students, regardless of age, gender, religion, race, ethnicity, physical or mental disabilities or socioeconomic status.â
âWhatâs a socioeconomic status?â said Wang.
âBeats me,â said Josh. âWhatever it is, I guess Staceyâs got one. But in any case, this rule says we have to let her into the club.â
Magnolia turned the paper over in her hands. Then she handed it back to Josh. âWell, what are you going to do about it?â
âMe?â said Josh.
âOf course, you. Youâre the president, arenât you?â Magnolia demanded.
âYeah, butâ¦â Josh trailed off.
âI hate to mention this, guys,â Wang piped up. âBut we also have to figure out what to do about the Binkles.â
âSheesh!â Magnolia flopped backward on to the sofa cushions. âIâve never seen a club with so many problems! I bet if Stacey knew how many problems we have, she wouldnât even want to join!â
Josh paced over to the window. Then he turned around and looked at Magnolia. âWait a minute. Say that again.â
âI said,â Magnolia huffed, âthat if Stacey knew how many problems we have, she wouldnât even want to join the club.â
âThatâs it!â Josh exclaimed. âAll we have to do is convince Stacey that she doesnât really want to join the club!â
âBut how?â said Wang.
âYeah, how?â said Magnolia.
âIâve got an idea,â said Josh. âA couple of years ago, my mom joined this political party. But she quit because she said there were too many scandals. Maybe we could have, you know, a scandal.â
âA scandal!â Magnolia jumped from the sofa. A scandal had dramatic possibilities. Once, in Young Hearts Afire , there was a huge scandal when the chief surgeon, Dr. Deirhart, was accused of stealing money from the hospitalâs charity fund. The scandal only cleared up when the doctor proved that the hospitalâs chief accountant was the true culprit.
âI know,â she said. âJosh could steal all the money from the clubâs bank account!â
âThatâs illegal!â Josh protested. âBesides, we donât have a bank account.â
âOh, yeah.â Magnolia slumped back onto the sofa.
âMaybe you could beat up a kid in the schoolyard!â Wang suggested, sketching a few punches in the air.
âWang! Iâm not going to beat up anybody!â Josh looked at Wang like he was crazy.
âOkay, forget that.â Wang lowered his fists with some disappointment. A moment later, he perked up again. âI know! How about a l-o-o-o-ve scandal?â
âA love scandal?â said Josh.
âYeah!â Wangâs eyes grew wide. âWhat if someone caught you two kissing in the schoolyard?â
âKissing?!â Magnolia threw up her hands in disgust. âHow come I always have to kiss someone?â
âYou donât really have to kiss! You just have to look like youâre kissing. For the camera.â
âThe camera?â Josh said doubtfully.
âSure!â said Wang. âIâll take a picture, and then weâll write something up and send it in to the Rapsheet . Itâll be great!â
âHow do we know theyâll put it up on the website?â Magnolia asked.
âNo problem. The guy who runs it is a Capulet,â said Wang.
âI donât know, you guys,â said Josh.
âWell, I think itâs a good idea!â said Magnolia. âBesides, itâll prove to Emmett Blackwell
