time we use it.â
He grinned and said, âOK.â
I went to the front desk and found a message there from Danny. I went to a phone and called his office. Penny answered.
âHeâs been waiting for your call, Eddie,â she said. âIâll put you through.â
âEddie?â
âWhatâs up, Danny?â
âHow was your meetinâ with the horse guy?â
âNot good,â I said. âWhen we got there he was dead.â
âWhat? Tell me.â
I explained, told him we called the cops after a lot of procrastination, and then relayed to him our conversation with them.
âThey let you go?â he said, when I was done.
âYeah, they donât know our history, yet,â I said. âAnd they were pretty respectful to Bing.â
âThis isnât good, Eddie.â
âDonât I know it.â
âWell, you donât know the half of it.â
âWhataya mean?â
âI found your trainer, Red Stanley.â
âWhere?â
âIn a hotel room.â
âWhat the hellââ
âHeâs dead, Eddie,â Danny said. âHeâs dead, too.â
Danny came to the Sands so we could talk face-to-face. We decided on drinks in the lounge.
We sat at the bar and each had a beer.
âDid you call the cops?â I asked.
âOh, yeah,â he said. âIâve got a license to protect.â
âOK,â I said, âtell it to me from the beginning . . .â
Danny started at the airport.
He found what flight Red Stanley came in on, what gate the passengers would have disembarked through, then talked to ticket agents, flight attendants, baggage handlers, security people, other than Ted Silver. Outside he talked to cab drivers, and one of them said he saw a man who matched Stanleyâs description.
âHe came out the front, carrying his suitcase,â the driver said. His name was Frankie. âI was next in line, but instead of coming to my cab he got into another car.â
âHe got in on his own?â
âNo,â the driver said. âAnother man came up alongside him, they talked for a minute, and then the sedan pulled up. And they both got in.â
âDid you see a gun?â
âA what?â
âCould the other man have had a gun?â
The driver thought then said, âI suppose he could have. Yeah, out of sight, like. Maybe jammed into the guyâs side? Was it a kidnapping?â he asked. âDid I see a kidnapping?â
âMaybe,â Danny said. âDid you see which way the sedan went?â
âIt just pulled away from the curb and kept going.â
âToward town?â
âThatâs what it looked like.â
Danny handed the man a fiver and said, âThanks. Could you pass the word to other drivers? Maybe somebody saw the sedan arrive at its destination, saw the two men get out? Funny lookinâ little guy with big ears? Fiver in it for them, too.â
âIâll pass the word,â the driver said. âYou ainât a cop, are ya? Youâre private.â
âThatâs right.â
âIâll pass the word.â
âIf I get somethinâ today, thereâll be a ten in it for them and for you.â
âRight, boss.â
Danny gave the cab driver his number, then drove to his office to tell Penny not to leave.
âWeâve got cab drivers all over the city lookinâ for this guy,â he told her. âIf he went to a hotel â willingly or unwillingly â weâll find out.â
âYou think he was taken?â
âYeah,â he said. âThe Sands didnât send a car for him. And heâs a stranger in town. The only reason he wouldnât take a cab is if he couldnât.â
âWhat if heâs a regular at one of the other casinos and they sent a car for him? Do you know for certain heâs a stranger to Vegas?â
