mean.â
Megan was surprised. âOutside classes? You mean, practise on our own?â
âYes. I just donât want to hold everyone else back.âMariâs face was beginning to turn red. âOf course, if youâre busy . . .â
Megan laughed. âDonât be silly. Iâd love to help out a bit.â
Corinne, who was passing, overheard this. âGood idea. Youâre a good teacher, Megan. Have you ever thought of doing it as a career?â
âNo,â said Megan, taken aback. âNot really.â
âWell, itâs just a thought. Come on, you two, I need to lock up this room.â
Megan and Mari headed towards the front entrance, discussing when and where they could meet up. âMy house is tiny,â said Mari abruptly. âWeâd only be able to take three steps in any direction. How much room have you got?â
âQuite a lot,â replied Megan, considering. âIf we rolled back the rug in the lounge . . .â
âWhereabouts is your house?â
âJust three minutes round the corner. Listen,â said Megan as a thought struck her, âwhy donât you come back that way now and Iâll point it out to you?â
Mari nodded. âGood idea. Then I can come knocking on your door one evening!â
They approached the skate park together, and Megan felt her heart skip a beat as she spotted Danny practising ollies in the middle of the concrete. On animpulse, she turned to Mari. âYou see that boy over there?â she whispered.
âWhich one? The tall one with the dark hair?â
âYes. Heâs teaching me to skateboard.â
Mari looked astonished. âHeâs what? Youâre learning to skateboard?â
Megan nodded, eyes sparkling. âWell, sort of. Heâs amazing, Mari. He can do all these jumps and tricks and things.â
âIâll bet he can. Heâs
very
cute too.â Mari raised her eyebrows. âHow do you know him?â
âI bumped into him one day. Literally. We crashed into each other.â
âWow. And so now heâs teaching you to skateboard.â Mari nudged her friend. âDid you pretend to be interested so that you could talk to him?â
âI
am
interested! Skateboarding is kind of fun.â
Mari grinned. âBet itâs more fun when youâve got a good-looking boy teaching you!â
Megan blushed. âWell, that helps, I suppose. But he is really amazing. I mean, look at that! How does he do it?â
âOh dear,â said Mari, smirking, âyou have got it bad. Shouldnât you dash down there now? Arenât you afraid someone else is going to become his pet pupil?â
âI hadnât even thought of that,â said Megan, startled.âBut then there are these two girls who hang around him. One of themâs his sister. Theyâre not very friendly. They nearly scared me off.â
Mari laughed. âNice. He must be worth it, to put up with them!â
âHe is. Well, I like him. And Iâm sure the girls are nice really. Itâs just taking a while to get to know them.â A movement behind Danny caught her eye. âThere they are. Those two, just coming down the steps from the playground.â
Mari glanced across, amused. Then, suddenly, she stiffened all over. Her eyes turned hard and cold. âThose two girls?â she said icily. âThe blonde one and her friend?â
âYes. The blonde one is his sister. Dannyâs sister, I mean.â
Mari grabbed her arm, and Megan jumped at the tightness of her grip. âBut thatâs
Samantha
,â she hissed.
Megan was startled. âSamantha, yes, thatâs right. Do you know her?â
âSamantha Brooks,â said Mari urgently. âThatâs her! Thatâs the girl who injured Fliss in the play!â
Megan gaped. â
What?
â
Mari pulled Megan back towards the arts centre and out of sight of the
