skate park. âOh my God, haveyou not been listening to a word I said? Thatâs Samantha Brooks! Sheâs only the most evil cow-bag ever!â
âBut . . . but . . .â
âAnd youâve been
hanging out with her
?â Mari suddenly dropped Meganâs arm, a horrified expression on her face.
âI didnât know it was her!â protested Megan, suddenly defensive though she had no idea why. âIâve only just moved in! How would I know anything about what happened?â A sudden thought struck her. Danny had said something about Samantha being âoff trackâ since what happened in the summer . . .
Mari was glaring at the ground. âMegan, youâve got to stay away from her. Sheâs a nasty piece of work.â
Megan felt uncomfortable. âWell, itâs not that easy, if Iâm going out with her brother.â
Mari actually took a step backwards. âYouâre GOING OUT WITH HIM?â
âNot like that, not like that! Mari, youâve got it all wrong!â Megan gabbled. âWeâre not going out like boyfriend and girlfriend, itâs just I only ever see him at the skate park and I said it would be nice to go somewhere just the two of us and so he said heâd take me somewhere really cool and we could . . .â Her voice trailed off under Mariâs steely expression. âHeâs really nice,â she ended lamely.
âHe canât be nice,â Mari said in a decided tone. âHeâs a Brooks. Heâs Samanthaâs brother.â
âExactly,â said Megan, feeling a little more sure of herself. âHeâs her brother. Heâs not
her
. I mean, you canât say just because sheâs nasty that he is too. Have you even met him before?â
âNo,â admitted Mari.
âWell, then.â
Mari shifted from foot to foot. âBut if you hang out with him, you have to hang out with her,â she said. âThatâs what you said. Sheâs always around.â
Megan felt frustrated. âWell, what do you want me to do? I like him. Heâs really cool on a skateboard and he wants to teach me. Sheâs not very friendly, but I donât have to be friends with her, do I?â She took a breath. âLook, Mari, I know why you feel the way you do, but I only just moved here. I havenât got many friends yet. Dannyâs been nice to me. I donât want to stop seeing him.â
Mari sighed. âSorry, Megan. I didnât mean to go off the deep end. I know I put my foot in it sometimes. Itâs just that Samantha and I â we have a bit of history, letâs say.â
âI know, but . . .â
âAnd I will
never
forgive her for what she did to Fliss,â Mari went on. âBut I donât know Danny at all.He could be nothing like her. And you have a right to be friends with whoever you want, of course you do.â She glanced back towards the skate park. âJust be careful, thatâs all. You donât want to get on the wrong side of Samantha.â
Megan grinned. âAll right. And thanks for looking out for me.â
âHeâs waving at you,â said Mari. âI should go.â
âNo, donât.â Megan grabbed her arm. âIâm showing you where I live, remember?â She waved back at Danny and then firmly turned away, although she really wanted to run over to him. âI can talk to him tomorrow.â
âIâm impressed,â joked Mari as they walked away from the skate park. âYou may be smitten, but youâre staying strong. Good on you, girl.â
âMari,â said Megan affectionately, âyou are an idiot.â
Chapter 7
letâs do it again!
MEGANâS JAW DROPPED. Sheâd never seen anything like this before.
âCool, isnât it?â said Danny enthusiastically.
Everywhere she looked, Megan saw red and white stripes, rubber tyres, steel beams, tarmac . .
