cause.â
Bertie sighed. She was wavering, I could tell.
âBetween the kids, and Santa, and the pets, thereâs going to be a lot going on. You know Iâll need someone there whoâs really good with dogs. And the best person I could think of was you.â
âNot Aunt Peg?â
I lifted a brow. âCan you picture Aunt Peg in an elf costume?â
âWait a minute.â Bertie spun around. âYou didnât say anything about an elf costume .â
âUmm . . .â
âBefore you answer,â she warned, âbear in mind that itâs a deal breaker.â
âThen no,â I said quickly. âThe costume isnât mandatory. Though I bet youâd look cute in a pair of striped tights.â
That was an understatement. Bertie was gorgeous. She had thick auburn hair, killer cheekbones, and the kind of body that instantly rendered every other woman practically invisible. If anyone could pull off a forest-green tunic and pointy shoes, it would be my sister-in-law.
âDonât even think about it,â she said.
âAll right, you donât have to dress up. But will you come and help out? If Iâm going to tackle a project this sizeâespecially with Mr. Hanover watchingâIâm going to need back-up I can count on. Itâs just for a few hours. And Iâll owe you one.â
âYouâre not going to let me say no, are you?â
Not if I could help it. Iâd beg if I had to.
Bertie went back to bathing the Toy Poodle. Even though her back was turned, I heard her mutter, âSomeone should have warned me before I married into this family.â
âI tried to,â I told her. âYou didnât listen.â And thank God for that, I thought.
âAll right,â said Bertie. âIâm in.â
