left when he gets out.â
âHave you found any evidence that Peter did help set up Matt?â Nancy asked gently.
âNo.â Lisa seemed both sad and relieved. âPeterâs been very protective of the bigger accountsâthe ones Matt wouldnât let him handle before. Every time I offer to help him, he brushes me off. The truth is, I havenât been able to examine Over the Rainbowâs records yet. Today I made sure he had a lunch appointment so that I could take a look at them.â
âTake a look at what?â
Nancy and Lisa both whirled around as Peter Sands walked into the office.
âPeter! What are you doing back from lunch already?â Lisa asked, her hands flying to her face.
âI forgot a file.â Peter pushed his glasses up on his nose, then paused, staring first at Nancy, then at the open ledger on the desk in front of her. âWhatâs going on here?â he asked, his eyes narrowing.
Suddenly Lisa burst into tears. âIâI think you may have s-set up Matt!â she stammered.
âWhat are you talking about?â Peter asked, a shocked look in his eyes.
âYou were the one who found the canceled check that led the police to that fake account,â Lisa said, wiping her eyes. âMatt said he never saw the check and didnât go anywhere near the bank. I believe him!â
âI know thatâs what he said. Donât you think I wanted to believe him?â Peter asked.
Stepping in, Nancy said, âMaybe youâd better tell us exactly what happened, Peter.â
Peter leaned against the edge of his desk and crossed his arms over his chest. âI found the canceled check by accident. It was mixed in with a bunch of checks and papers from an account of mine. I donât know how it got there. Maybe I should have asked Matt about it before I investigated myself, but I just thought he was hiding something from me.â
So far this fit with what Nancy knew already. âGo on,â she encouraged.
âThe check was from Over the Rainbowâsaccount, and it was made out to Gold Enterprises,â Peter continued. âIt had Mattâs signature. You see, he was allowed to sign checks for the club for amounts up to ten thousand dollars. The weird thing was that Gold Enterprises was what Matt had wanted to call our company, instead of GS Accounting.â
âSo that made you suspicious of Matt?â Nancy asked Peter.
âSure. Then I found out that Gold Enterprises was Mattâs companyâso I blew the whistle on him.â
Lisa had been listening silently to Peterâs explanation. âBut how did that canceled check get into your file?â she asked him now. âI mean, if my brother really was stealing money from the Rainbow, wouldnât he be extra careful?â
âYeah, I guess,â Peter answered with a shrug. âBut even careful people can make mistakes.â
That was possible, Nancy supposed. It was also possible that someone else had placed that check in Peterâs file on purpose, so Peter would find it. Of course, whoever might have done that would have to know about the bad feelings between the two partners.
âPeter, did anybody besides Lisa know about the trouble between you and Matt?â Nancy asked.
Peter thought for a moment. âI complained to Tony about it sometimes, when I picked up the accounting book. But thatâs all.â All at once Peterunderstood what Nancy was implying. âYou donât really think someone planted that check for me to find, do you?â
When Nancy didnât say anything, Peter shook his head. âYou have no proof that thatâs what happened.â
Nancy had to admit he was right. Somewhere she was just going to have to find proof.
âLook, letâs continue this later,â Peter said, checking his watch. âIâm already late for my lunch meeting.â
After heâd left, Lisa turned worried
