weâve had together. I mean real times. We used to meet at the clubs downtown. That man sure knows how to live. So Gianni sent you here?â
âYes, to see if we can find anythingâyouâd have a better nose for this sort of thing than we would downtown, if you see what I mean.â
Big Diamond nodded, puffing his cigar. âWhat do you know about it, Lloyd? You hear anything around?â
Lloyd shook his head.
âDonât just shake your head, Lloyd,â said Big Diamond. âThese are our friends and if we can help them, weâre going to help them. Weâre all in the same game. If some white guys snatched me, you bet your ass youâd go down and ask them to help us. And theyâd help us. Weâve been working together hand in hand for years. We get our money down there. If some punks come along and try cutting into them, theyâre cutting into all of us.â
Lloyd looked skeptical.
âCome on, Lloyd,â said Big Diamond. âTheyâll snatch the white bosses first, sure. Then you know whoâs next on the list?â He watched Lloyd, puffing his cigar. His pinky ring glistened momentarily.
âYou got it baby. Me. Or Elmo. Or Stan. Nowâyou know anything about it, Lloyd?â
âI havenât heard a thing. I doubt itâs our people, though.â He looked at Tony. âThe cats with us, I mean.â
âMaybe not. But you can get better information on colored guys than we can,â said Tony.
âThatâs for sure,â said Big Diamond. âWhat do you think, Lloyd?â
âMaybe some of the militantsâthe Panthers,â said Lloyd.
âMuslims?â Tony suggested.
Big Diamond shook his head. âNo, theyâre not into that, itâs not their way. Theyâre more religious; they donât want to snatch one guy. And if itâs the militants, theyâve got to be tough guys too,â said Big Diamond. âI mean, youâre not going to find any civil rights guys with the balls to get involved in this. Theyâve got to be closer to us than just across the street.â
âThatâs what Gianni thought,â said Tony.
âGianniâs right. Iâm right too,â Big Diamond laughed. He offered the bottle around. The other two shook their heads. âNow, the question is: who? Start thinking close to us, Lloyd, close to the other mobs. If we donât come up with anything, then weâll spread the circle.â
âIt just canât be any of our people,â said Lloyd. âThings are going too smooth, everyoneâs making plenty. Iâd know, anyway.â
âItâs not the close men youâve got to worry about,â said Tony, âbut the guys who hang around with themâtheir runners or pushers or whatever the hell they are.â
âThatâs where it is,â agreed Big Diamond. âThe little guys that see the action but donât get as much of it as they wantâtheyâre always hungry.â
âIâll talk around,â said Lloyd.
âThere isnât much time,â Tony reminded.
âRight,â said Big Diamond. âPeople who can do this can kill. They already have. Lloyd, get out there and do some talking right away. It shouldnât be long before you come up with a lead, if itâs from up here. Youâve got to think of Brooklyn and the Bronx too, Tony.â
âWe know. Thereâs a lot of ground and not too much time.â
âIâll go see Elmo and Stan,â said Lloyd.
âThatâs it, Lloyd. But take only Junior with you. If it gets around that weâre looking, theyâll go underground. Right now they must think theyâre safe because the white mobs canât get to them up here.â
âGood thinking,â said Tony.
âYeah, once in a while we lift our heads out of the watermelon long enough to think a little,â said Lloyd.
Tony stared
