think itâll be better if you donât sit in on this meeting.â
Her eyes snapped with fire. âYou mightâve mentioned this in the car,â she said. Her voice sounded perfectly calm, that smooth, smoky alto that heâd been drawn to since the first time she spoke to him in hisoffice. âThen you could have left the radio on and cracked a window for me so I got enough air!â
âListen, Jade, you work for me, remember?â
âIâm supposed to work with you,â she retorted. âAnd Iââ
âDrew!â A voice interrupted them. âItâs been too long.â
Drew turned with relief to see the Hispanic man walking through the door. Alejandro Martinez might have aged, but he still moved like a young manâenergetically. âAlejandro. Itâs been way too long.â He gave Alejandro the handshake-half-hug that men had perfected since the advent of football.
âWeâve wondered how youâve been,â Alejandro said. âI figured you were too busy, taking over at Robson Steel. How is it going?â
âWeâre managing,â Drew said. âItâs been tough, no question, but weâll get through it. Itâll just take some hard work.â
âIâm sorry,â Alejandro said, noticing Jade. âWhoâs this, Drew? I didnât mean to be rude.â
Jadeâs smile was like a sunrise. âIâm Jade Morrow. Iâm a, uh, business student. Mr. Robsonâs letting me tag along to learn about the business. Sales calls, especially.â
Alejandro looked at her intently, then looked at Drew. âHow altruistic.â
Drew felt himself flush a little, like a little kid caught scaling the refrigerator. âYes, well, Jadeâs really incredible. She wants to learn everything there is to learn about the business, you know?â
Suddenly he had a flash of brilliance. âI was wonderingâ¦do you think someone could take her on a short tour of the plant?â
Jadeâs full mouth set in a grim line. âIâm sure that would be fascinating,â Jade countered, âbut I thought itâd be more educational to sit in on the sales callâ¦â
âItâs hardly a sales call. It will just be two friends catching up,â Alejandro said, and Drew felt a wave of relief. âRosa? Could you give Ms. Morrow a quick tour?â
Rosa smiled. âSure, Tio. Ms. Morrow, follow me. Hopefully Iâll be able to answer any questions you have.â
Stymied, Jade sent one last caustic look at Drew. âThanks, Rosa. Thatâs very nice of you.â She looked at Alejandro. âAnd it was very nice meeting you.â
âLikewise,â he responded. Drew watched as Rosa escorted Jade out of the room. âWow. That is a whole lot of woman youâve hired there, Drew.â
Drew shook his head. âYou have no idea.â
Drew followed Alejandro into his office. It was small and an utter mess. Drew grinned. âNothingâs changed since the last time I was here.â
âWeâre that kind of business,â Alejandro said with a casual shrug.
âWeâve been doing business together for a long time,â Drew said, sitting down. âIâm glad that Robson Steelâs been able to count on Martinez Motors, and I hope youâve been able to count on us, too.â
Alejandro sat in his seat with a heavy sigh. âI think I know where youâre going with this, Drew.â
âI figured weâd get the sales order out of the way, and then we could catch up, maybe go for a little dinner. The whole family.â
âDrewâ¦I canât.â
âWell,â Drew amended, âwe donât have to do dinnerâ¦â
âNo. I canât put in an order for next year with Robson Steel.â
Drew stopped. âPardon?â
Alejandro fidgeted with a small piece of machinery that was being used as a
