paperweight. âDrew, weâve been good friends for a long time. I was friends with your father, as well.â
âYouâre not ordering with another vendor because of Dad, are you?â Drewâs voice was harsher than heâd intended.
âItâs not that,â Alejandro said. âWell, not personally. But Robson is in trouble. Everyone knows this. As much as I want to help you, thereâs a good chance youâll go under. If I place an order with you and youâ¦. Well, you know. Iâd be stuck until a new vendor could supply me, and theyâd put all their regular customers as priority. I canât afford that.â
Drew blanched. âIâm doing everything I can to turn it around, Alejandro. We wonât go under. Not if I have anything to say about it.â
âThatâs just it,â the older man said kindly. âYou wonât have anything to say about it. Not in the end.â
Drew took a deep breath. This wasnât happening. This just wasnât happening. âIt would really help the factory. We need this order.â
âI canât tell you how sorry I am that I canât promise it to you.â And to his credit, he really did look apologetic. âIf you stay in business, if you can get the factory back on its feet, Iâd be happy to sign back up with Robson Steel.â He paused. âJust not now.â
Those final three words hit Drew like a hammer. He closed his eyes for a second, then nodded. âI understand.â
Â
âJ ADE ? Whatâs this I hear about you being out of the office for three weeks?â
Jade was sitting in her hotel room at the Sleep EZ Motel just outside of Montecito, Nevada. The room was done in shades of mustard yellow and avocado green. She was sitting on the edge of her bed, which felt lumpy as old oatmeal. All of this wasnât helping her mood one bit. Now, her boss calling her on her cell phone was just icing on the cake.
âBetsy, you said I could go after the Robson Steel account. Iâm doing sales training instead of a media campaign. Thatâs how weâre going to get the hundred thousand.â
Betsy paused. âThatâs a good one. Nobody else thought of that.â
Jade grinned smugly. âI know.â
âStill, why are you out of the office?â
Jade closed her eyes. âIâm training sort of on the fly. Iâm doing a road trip with Drew Robson.â
âReally?â Betsyâs voice was inquisitive. âI see. And howâs it going?â
Jade let out a breath. âWellâ¦it hasnât been optimal.â Understatement of the year. âBut I think once we work out some communication issues, weâll be doing well.â
âIn other words, heâs being completely irrational and not listening to you,â Betsy paraphrased, a laugh in her voice.
Jade let out a weak chuckle. âWell, at least heâs trapped in the car with me for a few hours a day. I figure itâs sort of like brainwashing.â
âIn the car? You donât mean youâre doing a real road trip?â Betsyâs voice crackled with static. âWho does that anymore?â
âYou wouldnât believe the little towns weâre hitting. If we flew, apparently itâd take just as long to drive from an airport,â Jade said. Of course, the fact that she doubted Robson Steel wanted to spend the money on all of that plane fare didnât help, either, but she wasnât about to tell her boss that.
âJade,â Betsy said, her voice wheedling, âare you sure that you want to go through with this? It just seems like youâre betting awfully hard that this man and his company will get you what you want. Iâd hate to see you throw away your career at Michaels and Associates for a losing proposition.â
Jade had been thinking the same thing, but hearing Betsy say it⦠âIâm not,â Jade
