roots did not make his commitment to ThunderClan any less strong.
And perhaps now that Mistyfoot had confirmed how Oakheart had died, Bluestar would be willing to accept that Tigerclaw had killed Redtail. Fireheart decided to ask her about Graypoolâs latest revelation too; Bluestar might be able to tell him if a pair of kits had ever been stolen from the ThunderClan camp.
When he reached the clearing, Fireheart made straight for the Highrock. As he approached Bluestarâs den, he heard two cats meowing together, and picked up Tigerclawâs scent along with Bluestarâs. Quickly he pressed himself against the rock, hoping to stay out of sight, as the deputy shouldered his way out past the curtain of lichen that screened the mouth of the den.
âIâll try a hunting patrol toward the Snakerocks,â the dark tabby called over his shoulder. âNo cat has hunted there for a few days.â
âGood idea,â agreed Bluestar, following him out. âPrey is still scarce. May StarClan grant the thaw comes soon.â
Tigerclaw grunted agreement and loped off toward the warriorsâ den, not noticing Fireheart where he crouched by the rock.
When he had gone, Fireheart padded up to the mouth ofthe den. âBluestar,â he called, as the Clan leader turned to go back inside. âIâd like to talk to you.â
âVery well,â Bluestar meowed calmly. âCome in.â
Fireheart followed her into the den. The curtain of lichen swung back into place, cutting off the bright snow-light. In the dim interior, Bluestar sat facing him. âWhat is it?â she asked.
Fireheart took a deep breath. âYou remember the story that Ravenpaw told, that Redtail killed Oakheart at the battle of the Sunningrocks?â
Bluestar stiffened. âFireheart, that is over,â she growled. âI told you before, I have reasons enough to be satisfied that this isnât true.â
âI know.â Fireheart bowed his head respectfully. âBut Iâve found out something new.â
Bluestar waited in silence. Fireheart couldnât tell what she was thinking. âNo cat killed Oakheartânot Redtail, not Tigerclaw,â he went on, nervously aware that it was too late now to change his mind. âOakheart died when a rock collapsed on top of him.â
Bluestar frowned. âHow do you know this?â
âIâ¦I went to see Ravenpaw again,â Fireheart admitted. âAfter the last Gathering.â He was ready for anger as he made his confession, but the Clan leader remained calm.
âSo thatâs why you were late,â she observed.
âI had to find out the truth,â Fireheart meowed quickly. âAnd Iââ
âWait a moment,â Bluestar interrupted. âRavenpaw toldyou at first that Redtail killed Oakheart. Is he changing his story now?â
âNo, not at all,â Fireheart promised. âI misunderstood him. Redtail was partly responsible for Oakheartâs death, because he drove him under the overhanging rock that collapsed on top of him. But he didnât mean to kill him. And thatâs what you couldnât believe,â he reminded Bluestar. âThat Redtail would deliberately kill another cat. Besidesâ¦â
âWell?â Bluestar sounded as calm as ever.
âI went across the river and spoke to a RiverClan cat,â Fireheart confessed. âJust to be sure. She told me that itâs true: Oakheart died from the rockfall.â He looked at his paws, bracing himself for Bluestarâs fury that he had been trespassing on enemy territory, but when he looked up again, there was nothing in the leaderâs eyes except for intense interest.
She gave him a slight nod, and Fireheart went on. âSo we know for a fact that Tigerclaw was lying about how Oakheart diedâhe didnât kill him himself, in revenge for Redtail. The rockfall killed him. Isnât it possible that he is
