have you put him to bed.â
Flint sat down beside her. âIâm sorry it took so long, but Jim had to have his leg pinned. Since he doesnât have family around here, Whiskers and I waited until he came out of surgery.â He shrugged. âIt just didnât seem right to leave him alone.â
She nodded. âYou did the right thing. Itâs awfully frightening to lie in a hospital bed and know thereâs not a soul around who cares what happens to you.â
Flint gave her a sideways glance, but she stared straight ahead. There wasnât a doubt in his mind that she hadnât spoken from experience.
âWhat happened?â
âI came down with pneumonia after a case of flu and had to be hospitalized.â
âWhat about your brother? Why wasnât he with you?â
She sighed. âAs always, Cooper was off at some rodeo. I had no idea where he was or how to get in touch with him.â
He knew it wasnât any of his business, but dammit Flint didnât like the thought of Jenna being sick and all alone. âCouldnât you have contacted your parents?â
She shook her head. âDaddy had an accident.â She paused to take a deep breath. âHe never fully recovered. He passed away a year later. That was long before my stay in the hospital.â
âAnd your mother?â Flint could tell talking about her past had dragged up some very painful memories.
âMommaââ her voice cracked ââshe was gone, too.â
Flint put his arm around her and drew her to his side. When she started to pull away, he held her close. He told himself he was only offering comfort, lending her his strength. But the feel of her tucked against his side, the herbal smell of her recently washed hair, soon had him admitting that heâd been looking for an excuse to hold her again, just waiting for the time when he could take her in his arms.
âI guess weâd better get to bed,â Jenna said, taking a shuddering breath.
Flint swallowed hard. âWhat?â
âItâs late. We need to get some sleep.â She handed Ryan over to him, then rose from the swing. âAfter Iâve finished with Satin tomorrow, Iâll talk to Brad and find out where he needs me to work.â
Confused, Flint stared up at her. âWhat are you talking about?â
âWith Jim in the hospital, youâre a man short.â Sheshrugged. âI canât think of one good reason why I shouldnât help take up some of the slack.â
âNo.â
âDonât be ridiculous,â she said frowning. âYou can use the help. And I donât mind at all.â
The idea of her doing hard physical labor, didnât sit well. âI said no.â
âAnd why not?â She propped her hands on her hips. âIâm perfectly capable of moving cattle, riding fence and checking water holes.â
Flint came to his feet. âItâs hot, dirty work.â
She arched a brow. âAnd training horses isnât?â
He knew by the look on her face, that she thought she had him. But he wasnât going down without a fight.
âItâs not part of your contract.â
âNeither was cleaning up after a skunk. But that didnât seem to bother you.â
Ryan squirmed at the sound of the raised voices, causing Flint to whisper, âWeâll discuss this in the morning.â
She threw up her hands as she brushed past him. âFine!â
âWeâll see how fine tomorrow morning,â Flint muttered when the screen door slammed shut behind her.
The possibility that Jenna could suffer an injury similar to Jimâs just about turned Flint wrong side out. There was no way heâd ever let that happen if it was within his power to prevent it.
Five
âG ive it up, Jenna. Itâs not going to happen,â Flint said as he glared at the woman seated across the desk from him. She had presented
