Debbie decided. Sheâd better spill the whole thing after all. âItâs thatâ¦wellâ¦I-I think I may want to go Amish eventuallyâif such a thing is possible. I think it is from what I know of your community.â
â Ach , then thatâs different.â Saloma smiled for the first time. âDo you really have such a thought in your head?â
âYes, I do,â Debbie assured her. âIâve had these thoughts for a long time. I just havenât let them come out until now.â
âYou know this will be hard, Debbie?â Verna spoke up for the first time.
âThatâs why sheâs taking this slowly,â Saloma said. âI needed to know what the end goal was before we considered this.â
âYouâre not really thinking of going Amish, are you?â Lois choked out from where she stood in the kitchen doorway.
âDoes that disappoint you?â Debbie asked, glancing in her direction. Loisâs disapproval was one thing sheâd expected. Would Lois oppose her? That might make this situation untenable or, at the least, uncomfortable.
Lois managed to smile. âI said last week Iâd love to have you here, but joining the Amish is a little crazy, if you ask me. I want to join the Englisha , and you want to join the Amish. I guess itâs your right.â Loisâs face lit up. âSay! Why donât we switch places?â
Verna gasped.
Debbie shook her head. âThat wouldnât be a good idea, Lois.â
âMaybe in your opinion, but not in mine,â Lois retorted.
âThen we have differing opinions, I suppose,â Debbie replied.
Lois shook her head. âI think youâre out of your mind.â
âLetâs not talk about that right now,â Saloma interrupted. âWe will take the matter up with Daett and let you know, Debbie. Maybe by the end of this week. Will that work or are you in a rush for an answer?â
âI am,â Debbie admitted. âBut thatâs okay. This will give me time to talk to Mom and Dad and let them know what Iâve asked and that youâre considering it. I donât want it to come as a total surprise.â
âThat would be gut ,â Saloma agreed.
Debbie rose. âI think Iâve kept you long enough. Thank you so much for considering my request. I know itâs strange. I suppose itâs not every day that an Englisha girl arrives and asks to live with an Amish family and maybe join the Amish faith.â
âYou can say that again!â Lois said.
âI hope this works out.â Verna gave Debbie a quick hug. âFor more reasons than you realize.â
Debbie almost asked what those were, but she changed her mind. Verna was allowed her personal reasons for why she supported Debbie joining the Amish. It warmed Debbieâs heart that Verna cared.
Lois followed Debbie out the door and across the front lawn. Debbie turned to wave goodbye to Verna and Saloma, who were standing on the porch. Once they were near her car, Lois launched in.
âI didnât want to say too much in front of Mamm , Debbie. Originally I suggested this, I know, but I wasnât serious. This is insane. Do you know what youâre getting yourself into? Daett wonât even let us date Amish boys unless theyâre saints. How many of those do you think exist? To say nothing of how restricted our rumspringa time has been. In fact, Verna and Ida ended up taking very little of it at all!â
âIâm just looking into it for now,â Debbie hedged. âI wonât be that involvedâ¦not in your family. I donât want to be in the way.â
Lois made a face. âOh, yah , you will be involved. Daett wonât tolerate someone in the house who isnât considered part of the family. Heâll want to treat you like one of his daughters.â
Now the warm feelings rushed all the way through Debbie. Lois hadnât
