He had wanted a pet for so long. And now he had one. Katie knew how wonderful that could be.
âI canât wait to introduce Lucky to Pepper,â Jeremy said to Katie. âIâll bet theyâll be best friends, just like we are.â
Katie tried not to laugh. She knew that wasnât going to happen. At least not right away.
âI donât know,â she told him. âA dog and a cat can be trouble together. Pepper will probably start barking. And Lucky will get upset and climb up a tree or something.â
âOh, I donât think so,â Jeremy insisted. âSure, some cats and dogs fight. But not Pepper and Lucky. Theyâre different.â
Wanna bet? Katie thought. But she didnât say anything.
âWell, I canât believe you adopted a black cat,â Suzanne said as she lugged her bag of candy down the block.
âAnd I canât believe you took seven pieces of candy from Mr. Brigandiâs candy bowl,â George told her.
Suzanne shrugged. âHe said âTake whatever you want,ââ she explained. âSo I did.â
âI think it was very brave of Jeremy to adopt a black cat,â Becky told Suzanne. âEven unlucky animals need homes.â
âLucky is not unlucky,â Jeremy told her angrily.
âOh, you know what I mean,â Becky said. âIâm not afraid of Lucky. I canât wait to meet her!â She smiled at him as she fixed her football helmet and pads. Becky had dressed as a football player for Halloween. âCome on, letâs go to the next house.â She ran up the steps and rang the doorbell.
âIâll bet Lucky wonât like her ,â Jeremy groaned. âWhy canât Becky just leave me alone?â
George laughed and lifted up his one-eyed monster mask. âWe sure collected a lot of candy tonight,â he told the others. âMuch more than I ever would have gotten back in my old neighborhood.â
âIâm never going to be able to eat all this candy,â Emma W. admitted. She smiled through her white bridal veil. âGood thing I have so many people in my house to share it with.â
âI guess a big family can come in handy sometimes,â Katie said. âI canât share my candy with Pepper. Candy is terrible for dogs. Especially chocolate.â
âCats too,â Jeremy said. He smiled at Katie. âThatâs something else Lucky and Pepper have in common!â
Katie nodded. Jeremy really wanted their pets to be friends. Well, maybe they could. Pepper could change his mind about Lucky. After all, stranger things had happened ... lots of times!
âOkay, letâs fly over to Mrs. Hamiltonâs house,â Mrs. Carew suggested. Katieâs mom had used the extra black material from Katieâs dress and cape to make herself a bat costume. She waved her arms up and down so her bat wings looked like they were flying.
âYeah!â Kevin cheered from underneath the white sheet that was his ghost costume. âI canât wait to see those jack-oâ-lanterns!â
âEspecially the one of the cat,â Jeremy added.
Suzanne groaned. âAre you going to talk about that kitten the whole time weâre trick-or-treating?â
Jeremy smiled at her. âYep!â
Suzanne sighed. âItâs going to be a long night.â
âThereâs Mrs. Hamiltonâs house,â George shouted, running up to the door. âWow! Those pumpkins are so cool!â
âIâm glad you like them, George,â Mrs. Hamilton said as she walked out onto her porch.
Katie stared at her in amazement. Mrs. Hamilton was dressed in a long, flowing dress. She was wearing a blond wig and lots of makeup. âWow,â Katie told her. âYou look like a movie star.â
âYeah,â George agreed. âYou donât look like a witch at all!â
âGeorge!â Katie exclaimed. âThatâs not
