disease. I couldnât stand it anymore.
âWait,â I said. âI didnât tell you guys the rest. Yeah, Lance and I broke up. But the good news is, I already found a much better guy.â
âReally?â Lissa gasped.
Camille looked suspicious. âWho is it?â she asked. âYou didnât tell me anything about some great new guy.â
âI donât tell you everything, sister dear.â I tossed my head, going for a look of playfulconfidence. âItâs a surprise. You guys will just have to wait and find out at the wedding.â
Camille rolled her eyes. âWhatever,â she muttered. But she was obviously too distracted to waste much energy on me. âHey, Molly, did you remember to ask your grandmother if I could borrow her antique pearls?â
âShe said yes,â the bridesmaid in question answered, beaming. âThose pearls are going to look so amazing with your dress, Camille!â
Lissa giggled. âToo bad they arenât blue!â When several of us gave her confused looks, she giggled again. âYou knowâsomething old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. The pearls are borrowed and old. But not blue. Get it?â
I rolled my eyes at Teresa. All the wedding giddiness was making me blue, that was for sure.
âAll right, girls.â Mom glanced at her watch. âCan we keep things moving? Lissa and Mary, why donât you two go get changed first?â
As the other bridesmaids started twittering again, Teresa leaned toward me. âIsall the pink going to your head, or what?â she murmured. âWhy did you tell them you have some incredible secret date for the wedding?â
I was already wondering that myself. But what was done was done.
âBecause I do,â I told her. âThat is, I will âjust as soon as I find the perfect guy to ask.â
âHowâd it go?â Jason asked as we climbed back into his car an hour and a half later. âDid you girls have lots of pink and frilly fun playing dress-up?â
âIt was scintillating,â Teresa answered. âThe most exciting thing that happened the entire time was when that girl Molly stepped on her hem.â She shot me a disapproving look. âOh, wait. Also, there was Ava announcing to the world that sheâs bringing some fabulous man of mystery as her date. Too bad heâs totally imaginary.â
âI know, I know,â I moaned. âWhat was I thinking? Now I have to come up with someone really good, or Camilleâs suburban gossip posse will have a fit. To that bunch, getting dumped is a fate worse than death.â
âDonât let them get to you.â Teresasounded more sympathetic this time. âTheyâre too focused on their own lives to realize thereâs anyone out there who might be a little different from them. No imagination, thatâs their problem.â
I smiled at her gratefully. No matter what she thought of my sometimes impulsive behavior, I knew she was always in my corner.
âItâs probably just as well that Zoom guy is out of the picture,â Jason said as he put the car into gear. âHe was probably a little too edgy for that gang anyway.â
âYeah,â I muttered. But I wasnât really paying attention. I was too busy scanning my mind for new ideas. âListen, Teresa. Want to go hang out on campus again on Saturday? I had good luck there last time.â
âWhy bother?â Jason said before Teresa could answer. âI already found you the perfect wedding date.â
âWho?â I glanced at him skeptically. âThe counter guy at Burrito Moeâs? Iâd prefer someone older than fifteen, thanks.â
âNo. The lead singer of Manayunk Mucus.â
I rolled my eyes. âPlease. Iâm trying to have a serious discussion here.â
âI am serious.â He shot me a glance in the rearview. His eyes held
