need all the information we can get!â
âAll right,â Ethan said, his face chalky. âI shouldnât, but ⦠itâs ⦠itâs the Tomb of the Builder.â
âThe Builder?â Celieâs heart started to pound.
âI want ⦠I hoped to go with you to the Castle,â Ethan went on. âIn Sleyne. But not if youâre going in there first,â he babbled.
âA tomb? Is it haunted?â Rolf looked delighted.
âItâs the Tomb of the
Builder
,â Ethan repeated.
âThe Builder of the Castle?â Celie swallowed, trying to calm herself. âThereâs a tomb and itâs big enough to be on the map?â She exchanged excited looks with the others.
âHollowing out that mountain was no mean feat,â Pogue said. âHe must have been a great man, and powerful.â
âHe didnât do it himself,â Lilah pointed out. âIâm sure he had lots of people working for him.â
âBut he designed the Castle,â Celie said. âHe was in charge?â
âYes,â Ethan said. âAnd he was a very great man. We shouldnât disturb his rest. He ⦠you shouldnât disturb his rest.â His face twisted. âThe Arkower made me steal something from it ⦠Darryn, too. Thatâs why the griffins didnât want us. They know.â
âThat is being nonsense!â Lulath slapped him on the back and nearly knocked him down. âThe griffins, they are not being such ⦠and how are they knowing?â
âWe need to move now,â Pogue said. âWeâve stood around here too long.â He paused. âWhat did you steal from the tomb?â
âBut weâre going to the Tomb of the Builder, right?â Rolf asked. âYou could put back whatever it was you stole, Ethan. Because weâre going there right now!â
âI canât,â Ethan protested. âItâs gone!â
âThat doesnât matter,â Celie said. âBut weâve come all this way, and lived in the Castle all our lives, and we never even knew there
was
a Builder,â she said to Ethan by way of apology. âWe canât leave without at least taking a look.â
Chapter 8
âI donât like this,â Lilah announced.
âItâs just making you nervous because weâre all staring at your back,â Rolf assured her. âWhich is just as lovely as ever. Also, your hair is remarkably shiny despite everything weâve been through.â
Pogue laughed softly and Lilah continued to grumble. Celie just kept plodding along beside Rufus, who kept looking up with envy at his father, swooping and wheeling high above them. She was keeping him on a short lead because Rufus showed every inclination of heading back to drink out of the lake whenever Celie let go of him, and he was too tired from yesterdayâs flying for her to ride. So they were forced to walk through the forest, with Rufus straining against his harness, searching for the tomb.
âIt is not being the best of maps, this Lilah cape,â Lulath said to Celie, trying to cheer her up. âBut it is being thebest of maps that we are having. And how bright of your brain to see it as a map!â
âThank you,â Celie said. âIt is a bit too regular, though, isnât it? I mean, to make the fabric look better. Nothingâs really that round.â She pointed to the circle of lake.
âOh, but it is being the very rounded,â Lulath said. âAnd so is the valley in which the Castle is now sitting. I am thinking it is being made in this fashion.â
âI guess the Castle likes being at the bottom of a bowl,â Celie agreed. âAnd if the Builder could hollow out the mountains and make the outside so smooth, I suppose he could make the lake rounder.â
âPerhaps it is making it feel the safety, this bowl,â Lulath said. âBut the army that
