didnât believe me. I swear it was a griffin.â He lowered his voice. âThat griffin.â He pointed to Rufusâs father, hastily dropping his hand when he saw the griffin looking back.
They all stared at the big golden griffin. He preened his feathers, and Celie startled them all with a burst of laughter. She believed Ethan. It was exactly the kind of thing that Rufus would have done: steal a shiny gem like the Eye. And now they had a better chance of finding it! There was every possibility that Rufusâs father could lead them right to it!
âWho does the Arkower think stole it?â Lilah asked.
âThe Treaty-breaker,â Ethan said.
âWho?â
Ethan squirmed. âThatâs what we are supposed to callhim. Heâs the old Royal Wizard and the last Hathelocke.â He tilted his head at Celie. âWell, until you came here.â
âIâm not a Hathelocke,â Celie said in frustration. âIâm a Glower!â
âWell, technically weâre Hathelocke on our motherâs side. And Arkower on our fatherâs,â Rolf pointed out.
âArkish,â Ethan corrected him.
âYes, Arkish,â Rolf said with a nod. âOur fatherâs family is Arkish, and our motherâs is Hathelocke. So, I suppose you could call us Arklockes.â He paused. âNo, donât. That sounds awful.â
âThis treaty-breaker, heâs the old Royal Wizard?â Pogue said, ignoring Rolf. He frowned. âBut I thought the Arkower was.â
âThe Arkower was the greatest Arkish wizard,â Ethan said. âAnd the broker of the peace between us and the Hathelockes. But the Treaty-breaker ⦠I donât know his real name,â he confessed, âhe was the Royal Wizard of the Castle.â
âI â wait â youâre just going to have to tell us more,â Rolf said.
âBut not here,â Pogue said. âWeâve stayed here too long. We need to get moving.â He stood up and looked toward the lake. âShould we just keep going along the shore?â
âIt is being best if we are to stay within the covering trees, Friend Pogue,â Lulath said. He stood up and brushed the sand off his clothes, which were much the worse forwear. âIf only there was being another place to be resting, that is not the Castle. For surety the Arkower is seeking us there, and there he is finding us simply.â
Rolf helped Lilah and Celie to their feet, and the girls dusted each other off. Their gowns were so creased and stained that they were probably ruined. Of course, if they didnât get home, it would hardly matter.
âI wonder what the other thing on the map is?â Celie said, gazing at Lilahâs cape.
âWhat map?â Pogue followed Celieâs gaze. He frowned. âI donât ââ
âWhat in the name of â thereâs a map of the Glorious Arkower on Lilahâs back!â Rolf exclaimed. âIt looks just like the wooden one back at the Castle!â
âYes!â Celie clutched at Rolfâs arm, pointing to the map with her other hand. âDo you see it, too? I noticed it before on the boat but didnât want to say anything in front of the Arkower.â
âMay I be seeing?â Lulath went eagerly behind Lilah to look as well. âA wonder!â he cried. He pointed to the lake and the mountains. âHere is being the Arkowerâs only home, and here is being the Castle.â He pointed to the pillar shape at the bottom of the map, while Lilah strained her head over her shoulder to see what they were looking at. âBut yes, what is this being?â He rested his finger on the other pillar. âIt is not being far from here.â
Pogue waved to Ethan, summoning him. âYou must know,â he said bluntly.
âI shouldnât tell you,â Ethan said.
âNow you have to,â Rolf told him, his face severe. âWe
