one Darren was wearing in class today!â
A skeptical frown crossed Mackâs face. âAre you sure?â he asked, zooming in on the photo. âItâs similar . . . I think. To be honest, I didnât get a reallygood look at Darrenâs wristband. It was leather, right?â
âYes,â Fiona said. âWith the same pattern imprinted on it.â
Mack continued to examine the photo. âMaybe,â he said slowly. Then he gave Fiona her phone. âBut Iâm not totally convinced. Leather accessories are really popular. A lot of people wear them. Even me.â
Mack reached under the collar of his shirt to pull out his fox-tooth necklace, a gift from his grandfather that hung on a sturdy leather cord around his neck.
âThey probably even got their wristbands from the same store,â Mack continued. âItâs not like those things are custom-made.â
Fiona shook her head. âI donât think so,â she said. âAnd the stories match up. Ankur said that Jai got his powers mysteriously under control right before he disappeared. And look at how Darren aced practice todayâhe was incredible! Like a complete and total reversal from yesterday and the day before!â
âYeah,â Mack admitted. âThat was . . . unexpected.â
âI donât know how to explain it, but I think thereâs a pattern here,â Fiona said as she started to pace back andforth in the driveway. âLike . . . imagine this: A group of warlocks who are targeting Changer kids having trouble controlling their powers. Somehow, they slip them a leather wristband that . . . that . . .â
âWhat?â Mack asked.
âIâm not sure,â Fiona said. âMaybe it gives them a false sense of confidence. Maybe it controls their abilities for them. Maybe itâs a tracking device. The thing is, I wouldnât be a bit surprised if the other kids who disappeared were also wearing a leather wristband right before they vanished.â
âWhy donât we tell Jiichan and Ms. Therian your theory?â Mack suggested. âMaybe theyâll be able to fill in the blanks for us.â
âYeah, I guess we should do that,â Fiona said. âBut we have to reach Darren first. At the very least he needs to take that wristband off before something happens to him!â
With flying fingers, Fiona called Darren and then put her phone on speaker. One ring, two rings, threeâand then, to her relief, Darrenâs voice crackled over her phone.
âHey, Fiona, whatâs up?â
âDarren,â she began, skipping all pleasantries. âThat leather wristband you were wearing todayâwhere did you get it?â
âMy wristband?â Darren said. âMy brother gave it to me.â
Mack caught Fionaâs eye and mouthed, Told you so , but a nagging, insistent feeling made her press on.
âI know this might sound weird, but would you mind if Mack and I came over to take a look at it?â she asked.
âYou want to see my wristband?â Darren asked, sounding confused. âYeah, thatâs fine, I guess. But Iâm not home right now. Football practice.â
âOh, right,â replied Fiona. âWell, how about after?â
âSure, if itâs so important to you,â Darren said. âIâll text you when I get home, and you can come over.â
âWhen will that be?â Fiona asked.
âLike, fifteen minutes,â Darren said. âListen, I have to go before Coach catches me on the phone and makes me run drills for the rest of the week. Iâll text you soon.â
And with that, he hung up.
Fiona and Mack exchanged a long look.
âHe thinks Iâm crazy,â she said.
âI wouldnât worry about it,â Mack told her. âBetter safe than sorry, right? Weâll head over to Darrenâs in a little bit, check
