did,â Yuri protested, âthat odd blast of power or whatever the hell it was that knocked us all on our asses . . .â
Marcus frowned. âRoland told me about that. He said it felt like the blast wave of a bomb hitting him. What about it?â
âI think it did something to her,â Yuri told him, finally voicing his fear.
âLike what?â
âI donât know. But she disappeared when it hit her and I havenât seen her since.â
âMaybe sheâs at the network.â
Hope rose. âDid you see her there last night, when you took Ami to the network to keep her safe?â
âNo,â Marcus replied with reluctance. âBut Iâve seen her there other times. Maybe she went there after we left. Maybe she hasnât been around because sheâs afraid of Zach.â
And the mysterious elder immortal Zach remained in Davidâs home, refusing to leave Lisetteâs side until she awoke from what Melanie had begun to call a coma.
âCat wouldnât stay away without telling me,â Yuri said with certainty. âSheâd know how much I would worry.â
Marcus studied him. âThe two of you are really that close?â
âYes.â Yuri waited for Marcus to again question his sanity or to lambaste him for doing something so stupid as to fall in love with a ghost.
He didnât. âWhat exactly do you think has happened?â Marcus asked instead.
Yuri shook his head, helplessness rising within him. âI donât know. When that blast of power hit her, she seemed to . . . fragment . . . or shatter like the glass in a dropped picture frame, then vanished. I havenât seen her since.â
Marcus swore.
âWhat? Do you know what it means?â
âNo. Iâve never seen that happen before.â
Yuriâs anxiety rose. He didnât know what to do. âWould Seth and David know?â
âPossibly. But both are busy pouring all of their energy into healing Lisette and trying to wake her from the damned coma or whatever the hell it is that drug has done to her.â He thought for a moment. âI tell you what. Iâll have Richart teleport me over to the network after I get a few hoursâ sleep. Iâll tell him I think I left something behind when I was there last night with Ami. And Iâll have a quick look around to see if Catâs there.â
âThank you.â Yuri would go himself, but didnât want to leave until he had to hunt in case Cat should return.
âI canât stay more than a few minutes,â Marcus added. âI donât want to stray too far from Ami. But it shouldnât take me long.â
Yuri nodded and thanked him again.
Marcus headed for the door and gripped the knob, but didnât turn it. A minute passed, during which he seemed to debate over whether he wanted to say something more. âI understand, you know,â he murmured and looked at Yuri over his shoulder.
Yuri frowned. âUnderstand what?â His concern for Cat?
âThe position youâre in. I can empathize,â the elder immortal said. âI loved a woman I couldnât have for eight hundred years before I met Ami.â
Yuri had almost forgotten Marcusâs peculiar history.
âAt least the woman you love can love you back.â Marcus turned the knob, then hesitated again and arched a brow. âShe does love you back, right?â
âI believe so,â Yuri said. âBut ...â
Marcus waited for him to finish.
âWe canât ...â Yuri wasnât sure what drove him to continue. âI canât touch her.â
âWhen she leaned against you at the meeting, it looked as though you could feel her.â
âI feel a tingling sensation,â Yuri told him. âBut I canât touch her skin. Canât feel the weight of her against me.â And how he longed to.
Marcus sighed. âIâm sorry. I was going to say
